Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture Arts Internship: Public Programs Intern

Through funding provided by the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture Arts Internship Program, the Public Programs department of the Skirball Cultural Center offers one paid 400-hour internship for a qualified undergraduate student. Individuals looking to gain experience in event planning and an array of public programming opportunities that are being produced in the museum and cultural center fields should apply! 

Through the LADAC Arts Internship program, 200+ undergraduate interns will participate this year at performing, presenting, and literary nonprofit arts organizations and municipal arts agencies throughout LA County. In addition to their 400-hour paid internship, interns will participate in educational and networking events as part of the program, which is funded by the Getty Foundation. The educational events are designed to provide interns with a broader perspective of the vibrant arts and cultural landscape of the County. Dates/Hours:

The Public Programs internship will be held as a hybrid remote and in-person position with onsite work expected at the Skirball Cultural Center for all scheduled events. This position will be scheduled at a minimum 15 hours per week between September 12, 2023 through March 1, 2024 at a stipend of $6,760 ($16.90/hr.) for a 400-hour total commitment per the LADAC internship requirement. Work shifts will be worked out with the applicant to be flexible with fall/spring class schedules. 

Responsibilities:

The Public Programs internship provides hands-on experience in live arts programming. The intern will join the Public Programs department to join in the brainstorming, planning, and execution of a variety of events produced for the public. Examples of responsibilities are as follows: 

  • Working alongside Skirball’s head of Public Programs and Production Manager, the intern will assist in producing fall/spring concerts, film screenings, staged readings/theatrical performances, literary events and panel discussions for artists and authors, & our Late Night! museum events.
  • Assist with event guest check-in, box office and attendance reporting, and interacting with the public to provide a positive experience for all.
  • Work with artists, vendors, and Skirball staff across multiple departments.
  • Participate in weekly department staff meetings.

Eligibility:

As per the eligibility criteria of the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture Arts Internship program, this internship is intended for students who must:

  • Be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student in a four-year or community college.
  • Students who have graduation dates between May 1, 2023–December 1, 2023 are eligible to participate.
  • Attend a college in Los Angeles County or show proof of Los Angeles County residency if attending an out of state school.
  • Must be a first-time participant of this internship program.
  • May not hold a previous BA, BS, or higher degree.

Qualifications:

  • Candidates should be motivated, organized, and adaptable to working in a fast-paced creative environment.
  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, internet research, and accurate typing) are required. 
  • Availability for event coverage throughout the fall/spring as needed. Weekday work hours will be adjusted accordingly for time spent working programs. 
  • A passion for the arts and previous event production experience is preferred but not required.
