JOB DESCRIPTION


Position Title: Student Staff
Division/Department/Section: Rick and Susan Sontag Center for Collaborative Creativity
Reports to Supervisor: Director
Salary Grade: Hourly/$15.50
FLSA: Non-Exempt
Classification: Part-Time
Start Date: 9/5/23
Physical Class: Light (up to 20 lbs.)


All applicants must be enrolled at one of the Claremont Colleges at least half-time during the term of employment. Applicants must be in good academic standing at the time of application and throughout their employment. 
Student staff are expected to work approximately 6-12 hours per week in 3-hour and 4-hour work shifts, including at least one biweekly weekend shift (Friday evening, Saturday, or Sunday). A mandatory Student Staff training will take place on Saturday, September 9th, from 12p-2p. Please note that at this moment, first-, second-, and third-year students will be prioritized. Student Staff Responsibilities
Working at the Hive is a privilege that merits a student’s long-term commitment during the academic year. Both individual work and group collaboration are essential for the success of our programs and our service to the community. The Hive depends on student staff to accomplish its goal of accelerating the creative development of students across the 7Cs, and are a critical link to their peers, faculty, staff, alumni, and guests.

As part of the Hive’s team and regardless of focus area, all student staff will be expected to:
  • Fulfill shift responsibilities as scheduled and find coverage for shift if a conflict arises
  • Maintaining and resetting Hive equipment
  • Maintaining and resetting Hive facilities
  • Attend scheduled monthly general staff meetings 
  • Attend scheduled check-in meetings with their supervisor
  • Contribute to ongoing improvement and development of the Hive

In addition to the responsibilities listed above, we are currently seeking candidates that possess skills and interest in one or more of the following areas:

TOOL BOX:
  • Trains students and facilitates activities in woodworking, metalsmithing, jewelry making, clay art, or other creative practice(s). Please specify your specific background/interest in your application.
  • Co-leads Proctor Hours and Skill Shares for students interested in learning how to use Toolbox equipment
  • Aids users in designing and constructing reasonable independent projects in the Toolbox
  • Works with other Toolbox proctors to maintain the space by reorganizing, cleaning, and demonstrating the norms of the space to users of the Toolbox

SOUND BOX ENGINEER:
  • Leads Skill Shares for students interested in learning music production, sound design, song-writing, etc. 
  • Leads 1:1 Proctor Hours sessions to train students in the Sound Box
  • Applies and further develops knowledge and skills in utilizing recording equipment, music production, and using sound design programs such as Ableton, Logic Pro, Garage Band, etc.

4) Our shifts are 3-6p and 6-9p on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday; on Fridays 1-4p, and 4-7p; and Saturday/Sunday 1-5p. All student staff are required to have availability for at least one standing weekend shift (marked in orange below: Friday 4-7p, Saturday, or Sunday) for 1-2 weekend shifts per month. Applicants who cannot commit to working weekend shifts will not be considered.
