Paid positions, as well as paid and non-paid internships, are available.
Position Summary: Counselors supervise campers and provide for their care, safety, and well-being.
Job-Specific Responsibilities:
- Ensure campers have an enjoyable and worthwhile experience
- Supervise and participate fully with assigned camper group in all activities, evening programs, and special events
- Adhere to safety rules and emergency procedures to ensure the safety of the campers
- Include campers in the scheduling of activities best to meet the needs and interests of the group
- Review campers’ applications and familiarize yourself with campers’ individual backgrounds and needs prior to camper arrival
- Prepare cabins for camper arrival
- Greet campers and introduce them to their new surroundings
- Familiarize yourself with each camper’s needs and preferences regarding program activities, as well as their expectations, during their stay
- Assist with required rest hour and night cabin duty shifts
- Attend staff meetings to:
- Engage with staff across all departments to enhance camper care and programming
- Develop a weekly schedule of activities for camper groups according to campers’ interests and abilities
- Coordinate campout and cookout activities
- Thoroughly review Special Needs List
- Supervise and assist campers with personal care as needed (Please note: When assisting campers with personal care needs, at least two staff must be present.)
- Ensure campers are on time for medications, meals, and activities
- Promptly report to the Nursing Department:
- Unusual physical symptoms
- Changes in dietary pattern
- Unusual or lack of bowel movements
- Incidents of injury, as well as damage or loss of property
- Seizure activity
- Complete Take-Home Report for each camper by Thursday at 2:15 PM
- Prepare awards for campers in your group to be presented at the awards ceremony
- Participate in staff orientation
- Abide by all Camp Courageous rules and policies
Please note: Every effort should be made to minimize the potential of staff being one-on-one with a camper when out of sight of others. This includes restroom and shower areas, during personal care, and when in the healthcare setting.
Qualifications:
1. 18 years of age or older
2. Sincere and genuine interest in working with individuals with special needs
3. High level of maturity and integrity
4. Enjoyment and appreciation of nature
5. Experience working with individuals with special needs preferred
6. Current Standard First Aid and CPR certification (Can be obtained during staff orientation)
7. Current physical examination, renewable every two years
