Summer 2024 Therapeutic Recreation Internship

For: Therapeutic Recreation Majors

The purpose of the internship is to provide opportunities for the student to put into practice and to observe work experiences, thereby, evaluating those concepts, theories, and techniques which were learned in classroom situations and to gain practical experience at Stewart Home & School before accepting professional employment.
  • Comprehension of Individuals Served: Opportunities to understand etiologies, symptoms and treatments associated with the populations served at Stewart Home & School.
  • Assessment: Opportunities to understand the reasoning for assessment and procedures required for selected Explain how domains are assessed (i.e., cognitive, social, motor, emotional, leisure background, etc.).
  • Program/Treatment Planning: Opportunities to plan, develop and promote a variety of recreation activities and programs; gain insight into the many details and facets involved in planning.
  • Implementing Intervention: Opportunities to lead groups, using various leadership styles/techniques and equipment appropriate for the group or individual.
  • Documentation and Evaluation: Opportunities to understand the importance of accountability and be exposed to all documentation required by regulating agencies. Using methods of documenting & interpreting progress and discharge planning.
  • Professional Advancement and Public Relations: Opportunities to promote therapeutic recreation at Stewart Home & School and in the community.
  • Management: Opportunities to observe and become involved in the running of the Recreation Department at Stewart Home & School. Such experiences include operations and procedures, budgeting and financial planning, bookkeeping and accounting services and computer operations when available. Opportunities to observe personnel administration related areas such as employment and promotional practices, staff conferences and meetings. Awareness of “Quality Improvement” components (i.e., utilization review, monitoring, outcome indicators, risk management, infection control, etc.).
  • Additional Information: Opportunities to acquire skills, developing the student intern into the most efficient, effective, and successful therapist as possible.


Requirements



EXPECTATIONS OF THE INTERN 

  • Possess the sufficient education, fieldwork and experience meeting school requirements to be eligible to apply for an internship.
  • Have no conflicting commitments during the 16-week, Interns must be available to work at all times, including weekdays, evenings, holidays and weekends as scheduled by the intern supervisor.
  • Arrive on time and dressed in an appropriate manner.
  • Treat all residents, staff and visitors with respect.
  • Take an active role in the internship.
  • Develop skills needed in planning, implementing and evaluating.
  • Represent Stewart Home & School and your university in a professional manner, provide creative ideas and learn from every opportunity provided. The intern must be willing to spend the time it takes to complete work properly with pride and enthusiasm.
  • Become familiar and adhere to the policies and procedures of Stewart Home & School
  • Prepare for meetings with the internship supervisor by being prepared to ask questions and present constructive ideas as well as share honest feelings and reactions.
  • Acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities for practicing Recreation Therapy by following Stewart Home & School’s internship schedule with increasing autonomy and independence.

Housing and meals provided to all interns.
