P230244 - Assistant Dean for Community Engagement - SPHHP Community Engagement
Position Summary:
The University at Buffalo (UB) School of Public Health and Health Professions (SPHHP) is seeking an Assistant Dean for Community Engagement. This highly visible senior leader reports to the SPHHP Dean and will direct engagement and outreach activities focused on advancing SPHHP’s reputation, supporting each SPHHP department, and building and fostering mutually beneficial partnerships with organizations and individuals in the community.
Through strong communication, coordination, and planning, this self-directed professional will provide the leadership and direction required to ensure SPHHP builds purposeful relationships with our various communities in our region and throughout the world, including alumni, community-based organizations, foundations, corporations, and professional organizations. SPHHP values candidates for this position with an understanding of the needs of and experience working in underserved communities.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Community Engagement:
Strengthen and grow the school’s current community engagement activities and public service.
Enhance the visibility of the school’s contribution to the community to both internal and external constituents.
Create an effective and efficient infrastructure to identify, track and access community outreach initiatives.
Building strong partnerships with internal stakeholders across the university campus to support teaching, research, and students’ academic experience.
Engage with community leaders in various agencies and the health care industry.
Provide support to SPHHP departments in order to ensure community engagement accreditation standards are met.
Alumni engagement:
Focus on engaging UB graduates, students, and faculty with the goal of building and sustaining meaningful relationships with alumni and the community organizations they are connected with.
Develop initiatives (programs, resources and processes) that expand, enhance and integrate the school’s diverse community and alumni relationships for maximum positive impact on the school’s academic programs and reputation.
Collaborate with UB Office of Alumni Engagement, SPHHP Philanthropy Staff, and other SPHHP staff/faculty on university-wide and school efforts to engage and communicate with SPHHP alumni.
Supervisory role:
Co- Supervise Assistant Director Assistant Director of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement (50 % of this role focuses on alumni activities such as: alumni mentoring, homecoming, UB wide alumni events .)
Co- Supervise the senior public health fellow assign to the SPHHP (25% of this role focuses on young alumni activities as they relate to career development).
Depending on qualifications, the Assistant Dean may be eligible for an affiliate faculty appointment and be assigned duties in support of the academic mission. In this case, they will be assigned a “home department” in one of the five academic departments in SPHHP based on fit with the person’s area of expertise.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree with 5 years of experience building relationships in a field such as health care administration, non-profit leadership, community or business development, external affairs, public relations, community outreach or philanthropy.
- Proven success in developing partnerships.
- A well-established network of Western New York public health and/or healthcare-delivery professionals and organizations or demonstrated ability to create such a network.
- Experience managing multiple highly visible projects and priorities.
- Experience supervising employees and project teams.
- Ability to travel within Western New York, regionally (occasionally) and nationally (on a limited basis)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree or higher
- More than 10 years’ experience building relationships in a field health care administration, non-profit leadership, community or business development, external affairs, public relations, community outreach or philanthropy
- Strong understanding of or experience in the work of public health and/or the healthcare practice community
- Familiarity with and success in the complex environment of a public university
- Experience with strategic planning and budget development processes
