Senior Project Associate: Planning and Community Outreach/Engagement (Bilingual Spanish)

We are excited to be growing our management and policy planning team and are seeking an experienced Planning and Community Outreach/Engagement Project Associate to join our diverse team in Berkeley, California. MIG supports a hybrid work-from-home/remote and in-office schedule and encourages in-person work for learning and team-building opportunities. Proof of up-to-date COVID-19 vaccination is required for in-person work.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Project Types: You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team that focuses on policy and strategic planning, public outreach and engagement, facilitation and consensus-building, and organizational development and training. 
  • Daily Work: You will participate in all aspects of project design and implementation, including community engagement strategy, surveys and focus groups, event facilitation and management, research, content analysis, and writing. During the week, you will interact often with diverse members of communities to ensure their perspectives influence policy. You will have opportunities to work with and learn from planners, designers, and communications specialists and have opportunities for progressive responsibility and advancement.
  • Content Areas: The range of content areas you will touch can include transportation; land use planning; park and recreation; environmental justice; sustainability; diversity, equity and inclusion; child and family services; homelessness; health equity; and many more.
  • This is a full-time, hourly position. MIG works on projects throughout the US and some travel, evening, and weekend work will be required for community engagement efforts, site evaluations, or to meet deadlines. MIG encourages a work-life balance and these excess hours can be offset during the week when possible.
 
 

QUALIFICATIONS

You will be able to manage competing priorities, think critically and creatively, work as part of a collaborative team in an open environment; and maintain a sense of humor and camaraderie. In addition, you have some combination of the following qualifications and skills: 
  • You have a Bachelor’s degree in planning, public policy, or related field. (A Master’s degree in complementary field is a plus)
  • You are local or willing to relocate or commute to the Berkeley area to attend regular client meetings and collaborate with the MIG team. 
  • You have relevant experience working in planning or a closely related field with an understanding of and commitment to quality, community centered planning and design.
  • You have deep knowledge and demonstrated experience in equity centered work, including how to articulate and address institutional and structural racism and its intersections with other forms of oppression including sexism, heterosexism, classism, and ableism. MIG values and respects both lived experience as part of a non-dominant group (e.g., gender identity, sexual orientation, race and ethnicity, ability, etc.) and experience gained through study and work.
  • You are able to speak in front of groups to participate in small and large group discussions and trainings.
  • You have excellent skills in written and verbal communication, as well as graphic design and presentation.
  • You are an adaptable teammate who is willing to pitch in and help others on the MIG team. 
  • You have software proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat Pro. (Survey, GIS and Adobe Creative Suite software skills are a plus.)
  • You are a people-person with an ability to develop collaborative, productive and respectful relationships with community members, organizations and partners, including but not limited to low-income communities and communities of color.
  • You have bilingual fluency (Spanish) in both verbal and written communication. To support engagement with monolingual Spanish-speaking communities, this is required for this position.
