2023-2024 WI AmeriCorps Children's Health Alliance

Children’s Health Alliance of Wisconsin (Alliance) is a voice for children’s health. We raise awareness, mobilize leaders, impact public health and implement programs proven to work. We are affiliated with Children’s Wisconsin. Our key initiatives are environmental health, emergency care, food security, injury prevention and death review, medical home, and oral health. This position is designed to expand our efforts. Overnight travel is rare, but may occur. Mileage and travel costs will be reimbursed.

Due to COVID-19, some work may need to be done virtually or carried out differently. This position will be a combination of in person and remote work. This position will likely work out of our West Allis office on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays followed by remote work on Thursdays and Fridays. 

Duties & Responsibilities (organized by initiative)
 
Alliance (overall) – Tara is primary contact and AmeriCorps member site supervisor
 
·      Write a monthly blog article for the AmeriCorps/student web page.
·      Engage in weekly check-in meetings with site supervisor.
·      Ensure you are professional and cast a positive shadow with all students and staff.

Environmental health (asthma and lead poisoning prevention)
·      Implementation and promotion of the Wisconsin Asthma Coalition (WAC) school and child care walkthrough programs in order to decrease exposure to environmental asthma triggers.
o  Outreach to schools and child care centers the WAC walkthrough program.
o  Coordinate pre, post and follow up evaluation with participating centers.
o  Promote the WAC walkthrough programs at relevant conferences and meetings.
o  Compile newsletter articles, journal articles, handouts and resources.
o  Coordinate logistics for trainings and webinars.
Emergency care –
·      Promote the use of non-pharmacologic pediatric pain management techniques among pre-hospital and hospital emergency care providers.
o  Promote WI EMSC program, pediatric comfort kits, reference cards and kilo conversion notepads at conferences and meetings.
o  Compile and send out requests for comfort kits, reference cards and kilo notepads.
o  Implement evaluation plan and report to project manager.
·      Promote the practice of obtaining a weight estimate in kilograms among pre-hospital providers.
o  Promote length-based weight estimate tapes via social media, website and newsletter.
o  Distribute length-based weight estimate tapes to pre-hospital providers statewide.
o  Monitor the proportion of pediatric ambulance runs with documented weight estimates and report findings to the WI EMSC Advisory Committee.
·      Improve professional education
o  Observe pediatric training sessions at the Wisconsin Emergency Medical Services Association Conference.
o  Observe quarterly virtual pediatric emergency care coordinator meetings for pre-hospital and emergency department providers.
o  Facilitate equipment set up, registration, and completing evaluation and continuing education certificates.
·      Develop social media posts for Facebook and Twitter.
·      Develop activities to expand the WI EMSC program.
  • Evaluate progress toward achieving WI EMSC performance measures.
  • Utilize the National EMSC Data Analysis and Resource Center’s contact list to prepare EMS agency and emergency department contact lists for data collection.

Injury Prevention and Death Review –
·      Assist with creating the Safety Net newsletter (find resources, write articles, meet due dates).
·      Develop social media posts for Facebook and Twitter.
·      Engage in and complete items associated with the State CDR Council Meetings. Ensuring meeting logistics, and follow up are complete. Take notes and create written meeting minutes.
·      Engage in Child Death Review (CDR) and Fetal Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) team meetings. Frequency varies, but typically held monthly or quarterly. Some state travel required.
·      Engage in the development of the annual SUID Report highlighting prevention efforts.
·      Assist the Milwaukee County CDR team with collection of records, abstraction of information, and entering data.
·      Coordinate the Keeping Kids Alive in Wisconsin Conference and Regional meetings.
Medical home –
·      Enhance families’ experiences through a successful referral process by connecting food pantries and primary care clinics to improve food security and health.
o  Engage in meetings with community-based organizations and health care representatives.
o  Identify new partnerships between various partners.
o  Identify logistics to advance this work.
o  Generate solutions to barriers that arise in partner meetings.
o  Coordinate research projects as directed by the program leader.
  • Support universal developmental screening.
  • Engage in developmental screening trainings.
  • Support promotion of developmental screening training to new areas of WI.
  • Revision/updates of mental health trainings/ this would include new screening tools.
  • Development of resources for health departments/health systems.
  • Advance care coordination of children and youth with special health care needs.
  • Support the Care coordinators Peer Networking group. This includes coordinating the meetings as well as identifying subject matter experts to provide content expertise.
  • Implement medical home communication plan.

Oral health
·      Contribute to the development of Seal-A-Smile program growth, improve communication to grantees and assist with planning the statewide meeting. 
·      Coordinate planning, development and promotion of oral health continuing education webinar opportunities and/or annual conference.
·      Contribute to grant writing and opportunities to support spread and expansion of oral health initiatives and impact. Engage in oral health community partner meetings.

Training
  • Discussion with site supervisor on member’s goals, interests and existing strengths

Qualifications/Skills
·      Excellent written and verbal communication skills
·      Strong organizational skills, detail-oriented and ability to work independently
·      Customer service focused and willing to work with a variety of individuals
·      Excellent computer skills and well versed in the Windows environment

Education and/or Experience
The Alliance is seeking applicants with a bachelor’s degree in community health, population health, public health or other related degree.
