The Marijuana Enforcement Division (MED) is a dynamic and innovative regulatory agency tasked with licensing and regulating the commercial Medical and Retail Marijuana industries in Colorado. First formed in 2010 as the Medical Marijuana Enforcement Division, the MED has developed a leading-edge approach to commercial marijuana regulation and is considered a global regulatory and industry leader. 

The MEDs Policy & Regulatory Affairs Unit consists of multiple team members with responsibilities over the Division’s legislative and rulemaking functions, internal and external stakeholder engagement initiatives, inter-agency and interstate coordination, policy guidance and research, development of policies and procedures, statutory reporting requirements, and administration of the Division’s social equity program.

The Mariijuana Enforcement Division is looking for a policy intern who is passionate to learn about state agency policy work, rulemaking, and stakeholder engagement through the MED lens. 

As an intern in the Marijuana Enforcement Division, you will have the opportunity to:
  • Shadow and observe various positions within the MED to gain further understanding on the daily duties and responsibilities;
  • Work on discrete projects assigned by the team in coordination with team members;
  • Provide support and assist the team with various tasks;
  • Administrative support including the accurate and timely completion of processing documents;
  • Enter data and information into data entry programs, databases, or online systems;
  • Timely completion and summarizing research as directed by the Director and Deputy
Director of the Policy & Regulatory Affairs Unit;
  • Develop personal organization and tracking methods such as internal spreadsheets; setting up the routine for tracking information; and deciding which software format is most effective to produce the required results;
  • Perform clearly defined assignments following established work processes and procedures. Operate within standard processes and alternatives and any deviation requires prior approval;

Work Environment:
  • Expected work schedule is hybrid with occasional onsite work at various locations. 
  • It is anticipated that this role will work approximately 20 hours per week
  • Our paid internship program is designed to last no longer than 3 months 



Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Enrollment in an associate’s degree, a bachelor’s degree, or graduate degree education program
A copy of your transcripts listing your name, the school name, courses by term, and term GPA or degree conferral and conferral date must be included in your documentation; unofficial copies are acceptable. Transcripts from colleges or universities outside of the United States must be assessed for U.S. equivalency by a NACES educational credential evaluation service. Failure to provide a transcript or credential evaluation report will result in your application being rejected and you will not be able to continue in the selection process for this position.

Competencies required for all DOR positions include good communications skills, interpersonal and people management skills, the ability to multitask, the ability to work with confidential information, the ability to work in high-stress environments, and the demonstrated ability to assist customers. 
Conditions of Employment with the Colorado Department of Revenue:
1.  As a condition of employment with the Colorado Department of Revenue, a requirement exists that all personnel timely file all necessary Colorado Individual Income Tax (CIIT) returns and timely pay tax obligations. As such, all employees must undergo a pre-employment evaluation of their tax records/accounts to ensure compliance with this policy.
