Government Affairs Intern (Temporary)

As an intern on the Government Affairs Team, you will have the chance to work in a dynamic and fast paced environment that provides the opportunity to put your critical thinking and project management skills to the test. From researching issues related to state and federal priorities, to crafting policy briefs and assisting with grant applications, you will gain extensive experience working on projects that will make a lasting impact to the community that you would want to live in.

Interns in the El Paso County Government Affairs Department; assists with various special projects and other tasks, at the direction of the department director. During the state legislative session interns will primarily be focused on assisting in developing, researching, and/or implementing policy solutions to complex legal and statutory barriers that hinder the effective delivery of County services. Internship responsibilities during the legislative session may include a combination of everything from researching the policy implications of proposals, developing materials and reports used to facilitate relationships with policymakers, generating legislative reports, developing legislative testimony, and actively participating in calls with State or Federal contractors. Outside of the state legislative session, interns will gain valuable experience working with the County’s federal legislative consultant to develop grant applications, draft letters of support or opposition, and track federal legislation or rulemakings.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities
  • Assists with special projects and other tasks, as directed.
  • Researches, analyzes, and presents findings on the impact that various Federal, State, or Local proposals or legislation will have on the organization.
  • Compiles and communicates information to department staff as assigned.
  • Creates reports, job aids, summaries, presentations, legislative testimony, letters of support/opposition, and other documents that facilitate decisions and increase the understanding of policymakers.
  • Represents the organization in meetings, on phone calls, or in person in a way that advances the County’s legislative priorities.
  • Leverages knowledge of statistical analysis, data tracking, and other similar methods to help identify trends.
  • Assists in the finding and compiling data for federal grant applications.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Working knowledge of Federal, State, or Local legislative processes and overall government structure.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and working knowledge of Adobe Acrobat Pro, and/or design systems such as Canva or Photoshop.
  • Analytical, problem-solving, organization, and time management skills.
  • Ability to provide accurate information and maintain an above average attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with excellent written and verbal communication skills, including proper grammar and spelling.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
Required Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent education.
  • Active participation in an education program pursuing a degree in public administration, political science, business administration, communications, economics, or a related field.
  • Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Demonstration of significant progress towards a degree listed above, such as successfully completing Junior or Senior level course work.
Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • Must pass conditional post offer background investigation and drug screen.
Work Conditions
  • Duties are primarily performed in an office environment. This is a temporary position typically not to exceed five months.
