LOCATION: San Jose City Hall, 200 E Santa Clara St San José CA
TERM OF ASSIGNMENT: June 2023 – Fall 2023 (possibility to extend to June 2024)
HOURS: Up to 20 hours per week during school. Up to 40 hours possible during the summer. (part-time)
COMPENSATION: Undergraduate Salary range: $17.00 - $18.71 per hour plus 5% ongoing compensation pay (unbenefited)

About the Internship
 
Per the City’s COVID-19 Mandatory Vaccination Policy, the City requires all new hires to provide proof of vaccination as a condition of employment absent an approved medical or religious exemption. “Fully vaccinated” means the employee has received two doses of Pfizer, Moderna or Novavax or a single dose of Johnson & Johnson.

The Environmental Services Department (ESD) has the responsibility to prevent stormwater pollution under the jurisdiction of the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board. The Regional Board issues a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Municipal Regional Permit (MRP) to the City of San José and 75 other co-permittees to regulate stormwater activities to protect creeks and the Bay.
 
ESD is seeking up to three (3) undergraduate college student interns interested in trash abatement, field inspections, and data management. Applicants must have experience with data entry, Microsoft Word and Excel, be able to work independently, and possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
 
This position will assist City Staff in implementing a new provision in the MRP, which will lay the groundwork for a new City program focused on reducing and preventing litter from Privately-owned Land Drainage Areas. Interns will gain skills and experience in On-Land Visual Trash Assessments that are used throughout the region as a tool to evaluate performance of trash control methods. Interns will also use ESD’s Environmental Enforcement Data Management System for data entry and data management.
 
This position is primarily focused on field work. Duties assigned to the position will include, but are not limited to:
·        Working in a team of 2, partnered with a City staff member.
·        Riding in City vehicles to and from field work locations throughout the City.
·        Walking during dry weather conditions.
·        Performing assessments on commercial, industrial, vacant, residential, and parking lot properties
·        Interacting with property owners, tenants, managers, etc. to educate on trash management, litter prevention, and other MRP requirements.
·        Entering collected field data into databases.
·        Various other clerical and administrative tasks, as assigned.
 
Minimum Qualifications
 
Undergraduate Intern: Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s degree program from an accredited college or university. Must be enrolled throughout the duration of the internship.
 
Experience: None. Preference for candidates with majors in construction management, ecology or earth sciences, engineering, environmental studies, geology, urban planning, Geographic Information Systems, or a related field.
