Responsibilities

The Graduate Research Employment Program (GREP) is a post-baccalaureate program for participants with an interest in biomedical research. The primary purpose of GREP is to provide a post-baccalaureate laboratory research experience that applies skills in science, technology, engineering or math to biomedical research including basic science or translational research. GREP participants gain research experience that may help them to decide on a career path related to biomedical research. In addition, the experience can increase the participants’ competitiveness and preparation for the next step in their career. These goals are achieved by providing:
•   A mentored research experience in a world-class biomedical research laboratory
•   Opportunities to participate in selected graduate classes and seminars
•   Career development, mentoring and networking opportunities
•   Presentation opportunities


Qualifications
•  Requires bachelor's degree in Engineering (Biological, Chemical or Mechanical), Biology, Chemistry or any closely related field and previous wet lab experience. Staff will be trained to use the relevant techniques. Previous experience with some of the following techniques would be advantageous: microfabrication or microfluidics, mammalian cell culture, biomolecular assays (ELISA, Western Blot, RNA extraction, qPCR, confocal microscopy), and Animal work (surgery, bleeding, necropsy).
•  Interest in biomedical research 
•  Minimum GPA of 3.0
•  Authorization to work and remain in the United States, without necessity for Mayo Clinic sponsorship now, or in the future (for example, be a U.S. citizen, national, or      permanent resident, refugee or asylee) 
•  A current transcript submission required – unofficial transcripts will be accepted
•  A 1-2 sentence statement of research interest
Students that do not meet these criteria do not qualify.
Applicants who are currently in Graduate or Medical School are not eligible.
Eligibility of applicants with advanced degrees above BA or BS depend on the specific degree.

Additional Qualifications:
The research group of Dr. Suman Bose has an opening for a Graduate Research Employment Program position to work on a highly interdisciplinary project at the intersection of device engineering, material science, and molecular biology to engineer cell-based products to treat chronic diseases. The candidate will be exposed to research that includes biomaterial synthesis, device microfabrication, studying cell/material interactions and responses, immunological engineering, cell scaffold design, and pre-clinical testing of devices in animals. The candidate will primarily work under supervision but may be allowed to pursue independent research directions after obtaining approval from PI. This is a great opportunity for recent graduates interested in gaining 1-2 years of intense research experience in an interdisciplinary area combining engineering with translational research and earning their position in journal publications.
