Data Research Analyst

We are currently seeking capable data storytellers, analyzers, and visualizers to serve as Data Research Analysts.

Data Research Analysts are part of CSET’s data team, working with specific lines of research to produce data-driven research products and policy analysis alongside CSET’s analysis teams. This dynamic role serves as a bridge between data and analysis teams and combines knowledge of research methods and data analysis skills. We encourage those with experience in common data visualization, programming languages, and/or statistical analysis tools to apply.

We are a cross-matrixed research organization focused on studying the security impacts of emerging technologies, supporting academic work in security and technology studies, and delivering nonpartisan analysis to technologists and policymakers. CSET’s research currently focuses on artificial intelligence, advanced computing, and biotechnology.

We are particularly interested in Data Research Analysts who could support one of the following lines of research:
  • Cyber/AI: Research areas include topics at the intersection of cyber defense and AI and the failure modes of ML, such as (but not limited to) analyzing how AI and ML techniques can improve cybersecurity; assessing the distribution and use of ML applications in cybersecurity; assessing how AI could alter future cyber operations or create new threats; or examining the potential failure modes of ML techniques. Ideal candidates have exposure to computer science, cybersecurity, or AI.
  • Biotechnology: Research may include examinations of the bioeconomy and global biosecurity. Projects span areas such as the biotechnology supply chain, infrastructure and funding, dual use research, safety regulations, international policies, and genomic data and editing. Ideal candidates include those with experience in biology, chemistry or laboratory work and/or exposure to genomics, bioinformatics, or related fields.
  • Workforce: Research on comparing the AI workforce in the U.S. and China, evaluating AI talent pipelines, executing an analogous analysis of the U.S. cybersecurity workforce, mapping industry and geographic migration trends, exploring non-traditional educational pathways in AI workforce preparedness, and conducting a K-through-PhD assessment of the U.S. educational pipeline producing AI, cybersecurity, and (more generally) STEM talent to understand where potential talent is being lost throughout that pipeline and what could be done to remedy those losses and increase the production of AI, cybersecurity, and STEM talent at all levels.

  • Communicating, in written and verbal formats, CSET’s data resources and data-driven findings to a range of audiences, including contributing to DC briefings and events;
  • Monitoring trends and developments in AI, ML, biotechnology, and national security policy;
  • Contributing to CSET’s organizational development, including contributing to internal working groups, seminars, and discussions; and supporting and mentoring colleagues;
  • Upholding CSET’s mission, values and culture.
