CULTURAL RESOURCES INTERN 
ADMINISTRATIVE INTERN 1 

Capital & Asset Management Program (CAMP) 
Olympia, Washington - Thurston County 

Have you recently completed or are you currently undergoing course work in History, Historic Architecture, Historic Preservation, Cultural Resource Management, Archaeology, Anthropology, or a social science related degree? 
The Department of Fish and Wildlife is Offering:
One (1) paid Internship with a flexible schedule, working 0 - 40 hours per week. 

Anticipated Internship Dates: 
June 15, 2023 – June 15, 2024

This is an exciting opportunity to showcase your skills and apply your classroom/cultural resources training to real world scenarios! 

The Cultural Resource Internship provides the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the practical application of cultural resources in an on-the-job environment all while gleaning valuable knowledge from the WDFW Team!

Assist the CAMP archaeologists in WDFW’s Cultural Resource Division on projects and provide technical assistance in the field of cultural resources management, particularly for built-environment historic properties.

Duties

Some of what you will learn to do,

Assist CAMP archaeologists in documenting cultural resources
  • Perform research and field documentation for historic property inventory forms, archaeological site inventory forms, cultural resource survey, cultural resource monitoring, and writing cultural resource reports. 
  • Evaluate historic built-environment resources by applying National Park Service criteria.
  • Typical resource types include historic fish hatchery complexes, rail grades, dams, levees, homesteads, farmsteads, and landscapes.
  • Contribute to cultural resource surveys/data collection, data entry, equipment preparation, and equipment maintenance.
Assist CAMP archaeologist in acquiring necessary cultural clearances to perform project(s): 
  • Assist in writing consultation letters for appropriate regulatory agencies and consulting parties. 
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work Setting, including hazards: 
  1. Substantial time at various field locations throughout Washington - working in wildlife areas, water, on active construction sites including around large equipment, and on active hatchery sites with hatchery staff. 
  2. Work is performed under adverse environmental conditions and occasionally carrying 40 pounds of equipment such as shovels and screens on uneven terrain.
  3. Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
Schedule:
  1. Hourly position - variable hours ranging from 0 to 40 hours per week and alternative work schedules including overnight stays are likely.
  2. Remote and telework options may be available when not in the field.
Travel Requirements: 
  1. Substantial field time and travel throughout Washington is required.
  2. Long field days and some overnight stays are likely. 
Tools and Equipment: 
  1. Pickup trucks, standard office furniture and equipment, GPS units, cameras, and hand tools for digging including shovels and screens.
Customer Interactions: 
  1. Interact with public while accessing work areas. Must be professional, well-spoken, and non-confrontational.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Highschool Diploma or GED. 

   AND 

  • Those that are current college students (enrolled and pursuing a degree) OR those that have recently (within the last six (6) months) completed a degree at an accredited college or university in at least one (1) of the following: 
  1. History
  2. Historic Architecture
  3. Historic Preservation
  4. Cultural Resource Management
  5. Archaeology
  6. Anthropology 
  7. Or a Social Science related degree.

Certifications/Licenses: 
  • A Valid Driver’s License. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Pursuing a degree in cultural resource management, historic preservation, history, archaeology, or similar discipline. 

Working knowledge of: 
  • Microsoft Office package including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Ability to: 
  • Record accurate and legible field notes by hand or digital devices. 
  • Operate a digital camera including download to computer.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment: 
  • Knowledge of general laboratory safety procedures.
  • Ability to closely follow standard protocols and perform work under moderate supervision.
  • Familiarity with safety protocols on construction sites.
