Water Meter Technician I

Position Purpose

Responds to customer requests for service including turning water on or off, responding to emergency calls (no water, open and dangerous meter boxes, broken pipes), and investigates leaks, high bill complaints and water damage to provide responsive service to customers.

This position is included in the Water Meter Technician career series. This career series is intended to provide a defined career path for employees interested in promoting in the water meter services technical field through education, experience, licenses, certifications, and mastered disciplines in the Meter Services Division. The career series will consist of three (3) distinct levels: Water Meter Technician, Water Meter Technician II and Senior Water Meter Technician. Each level will be discernable and achieved through pre-requisite qualifications. These qualifications must be met prior to consideration for promotion within the series.
 
Essential Functions
1. Turns water on or off for new services, tenant changes, at a customer's request, or for delinquent accounts, plugs/unplugs meters, performs leak repairs inside the meter box, and installs small water meters to ensure appropriate services are provided to customers.
2. Inspects, repairs, and/or replaces meter lids, boxes, and cut-off valves; raises or lowers meter boxes to proper grade level.
3. Communicates with customers such as notifying when turning water on or off, assists customers in determining causes of high readings including leak detection, answers questions, and makes explanations to ensure good customer relations.
4. Communicates with dispatcher by two-way radio and drives to locations requested in work order to provide a timely response and effective use of resources.
5. Inspects for illegal connections to water mains, theft of water, damage to city property, and issues citations for violation of water code to control loss and ensure regulations are followed.
6. Completes daily reports to show what actions were taken on work orders.
7. Reads commercial, residential and wholesale cities' water meters, records readings, and turns in for use in billing.
8. Regular, reliable and punctual attendance is an essential function of the job.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION:
  • High school diploma or GED.
EXPERIENCE: 
One (1) year of experience in one (1) or more of the following: 
  • Customer Service that must involve complaint resolution
  • General Mechanical
  • General Construction
  • General Maintenance
  • Meter Reading
EQUIVALENCY:  
  • A current Class D Water or Wastewater License from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) will meet the education and experience requirements.
LICENSES: 
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record.
  • Must obtain a Class D Water License from the TCEQ within probationary period.
  • May be required to obtain a Confined Space Entry certification from the TCEQ during probationary period depending on assignment.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS: 
  • Availability to work various shifts including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications. 

For evaluation purposes, acceptable qualifying experience for all positions must have been in a paid capacity unless noted otherwise in the minimum qualifications for the posted position.

Additionally, 30+ hours per week will be counted as full-time employment and will receive full credit for the amount of time employed. A minimum of 15 through 29 work hours per week will be counted as part-time employment and will receive half credit for the amount of time employed.

Working Conditions and Hazards 
  • Subject to inclement weather, traffic hazards, enclosed spaces, confined spaces, other hazards such as insects, wildlife and domesticated animals, and high crime neighborhoods. 
  • Requires extensive driving.
  • Walking, stooping, bending, lifting, squatting, climbing, carrying, jumping, crawling, digging, and moving of debris
