This position is in the Field Operations Directorate, Office of Field Operations, District 11 in Boston, MA; Lawrence, MA; Albany, NY; Buffalo, NY; Syracuse, NY.
This position goes from GS-04, step 01 ($13.86 per hour) to GS-04, step 10 ($18.01 per hour). The actual salary will be set based on the grade, step, and location of the selectee(s) and/or position. View the 2023 Locality Pay Charts.
As a Student Trainee, you will provide assistance and support to field management staff on a variety of matters in support of USCIS programs and mission requirements.
Duties
As a Student Trainee/Intern, you will gain valuable professional, administrative, and/or technical on-the-job training and experience with the opportunity to explore future career possibilities with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
- Research and assemble pertinent information from a variety of sources, including electronic files, archival records, instructions, directives, standing operating procedures, reference guides and operating manuals.
- Provide general administrative support to the functional area(s) to which assigned, including responding to routine inquiries, maintaining hard copy and software based filing and tracking systems, and preparing and editing correspondence.
- Assist senior Operations Support Specialists with monitoring and inputting data related to operational activities.
- Work with a team of senior Operations Support Specialists on an array of special projects or task forces. Create slides, graphs and charts for an assortment of briefings or presentations, related to the various HR issues or topics.
- Use advanced, sophisticated software products such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Excel to produce briefing materials.

GS-04: You qualify at the GS-04 level if you possess one (1) year of general experience which is progressively responsible clerical, office, administrative, or other that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties:
- Performing clerical, office or other work that includes filing, answering phones, greeting customers;
- Responding to routine inquiries, performing data entry; and
- Creating routine correspondence using a variety of automated systems AND are enrolled at least half time in an accredited institution. OR
- You may substitute successful completion of two (2) full academic years of post-high school study or an associate's degree from an accredited institution. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester or 45 quarter hours AND are enrolled at least half time in an accredited institution.

This is a Student Intern position in the Pathways Program. Selected individuals are placed in an excepted service position that integrates their academic studies with relevant federal work experience. At the successful completion of the Student Intern's academic studies and program requirements, the agency may non-competitively convert the student to a term or permanent position in the competitive service. Conversion to a Federal competitive service position will be at the discretion of the agency and is neither guaranteed nor implied.
