Climate-Related Risk Summer Internship
Climate Advisers—a respected research and public policy group dedicated to strengthening climate action in the United States and around the world—seeks a Climate-Related Risk Intern to join Climate Advisers’ Orbitas team for the Summer 2023 term. Orbitas is a first-of-its-kind, world-leading initiative that has built awareness of the climate-related financial opportunities and risks associated with climate transitions for tropical commodity supply chains that are associated with deforestation, such as soy, beef, and palm oil. This internship provides an opportunity for a candidate with a background in finance, climate change, forestry, environmental science, economics, international relations, or other related fields to begin to explore working in a climate organization. The successful candidate will support our dynamic Orbitas finance team while gaining exposure and contributing to our cutting-edge work in global climate change research and advocacy. This fully remote, paid internship is a temporary, part-time, non-exempt, non-benefits eligible position. Candidates must be available for 25 – 35 hours per week during regular business hours, for a 3-month commitment, ideally from June to September 2023.
Responsibilities
- Conduct research on behalf of the climate-related risk team.
- Assist with writing blogs and other materials on climate-related risks in the forest, food, and land sector, including along tropical commodity supply chains.
- Contribute to a landscape analysis on the drivers of climate transition risks that impact countries and commodities with high deforestation rates to inform project development.
- Assist with quantitative analysis that informs Orbitas reports.
- Assist with administrative support other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Relevant undergraduate or graduate coursework in finance, climate change, forestry, environmental science, economics, international relations, or other related fields.
- Experience in independent research and writing.
- Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, writing, and oral communication skills.
- Ability to be resourceful, take initiative, and be willing to take on whatever tasks are needed.
- Ability to manage, prioritize and multi-task on multiple projects in a fast-paced work environment.
- Ability to follow directions, exercise good judgment, and work independently.
- Ability to work well as a part of an inclusive team and to communicate across cultures.
- Demonstrated interest in global climate change, background in agriculture, forestry, and/or land use a plus, but not required for this position. We encourage you to apply even without direct climate policy experience.
- Experience in quantitative analysis a plus.
- Knowledge of land insecurity issues faced by Indigenous Peoples a plus.
- Ability to communicate in Portuguese, Spanish, Bahasa, and/or French a plus.
Salary: $18 per hour. This internship is not eligible for any benefits.
Location: Climate Advisers is a fully remote work environment with the majority of staff concentrated in the Washington, DC area. The internship may be performed remotely anywhere in the United States. You must be authorized to work in the U.S. for any employer; we are not able to sponsor visas.
