CDC Internship in Industrial Robotic Standards Analysis and Harmonization

CDC Office and LocationA research opportunity is currently available with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 stablished NIOSH as a research agency focused on the study of worker safety and health, and empowering employers and workers to create safe and healthy workplaces. NIOSH is part of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It has the mandate to assure “every man and woman in the Nation safe and healthful working conditions and to preserve our human resources.” NIOSH has more than 1,300 employees from a diverse set of fields including epidemiology, medicine, nursing, industrial hygiene, safety, psychology, chemistry, statistics, economics, and many branches of engineering.
Research Project: The research involves identifying, collecting, and analyzing the various industrial standards that cover topics associated with robotic, and similarly automated, systems. 
Participant will collaborate with NIOSH researchers to identify industrial robotics standards, analyze information within, and construct a framework for industry and non-industry professionals to understand the regulatory landscape within an occupational safety and health context. 
Learning Objectives: Participant will gain experience conducting research within the NIOSH research structure and presenting findings to fellow students and NIOSH researchers.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: May 22, 2023.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment LengthThe appointment will initially be for three months, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of ParticipationThe appointment is full-time.
Participant StipendThe participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship RequirementsThis opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.
ORISE InformationThis program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields (e.g. Health Communications, Health Policy, Public Health, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety and Health, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, Environmental Safety and Health, Public Health, Epidemiology, Risk Analysis, Health Information Management, Health Sciences, Databases). Degree must have been received within the past five years.
Preferred Skills:
  • Experience in scientific writing, scientific literature search, information analysis, information gathering, web search, computer software Word and Excel are favorable.
  • Experience with robotics, automated systems, engineering, computer science, health policy, industrial hygiene, and occupational health and safety would be useful to the project but not necessary.
  • Experience in scientific writing, technical information collection and analysis is preferred.
