CENG Operational Student Safety Technician

CENG Operational Student Safety Technician 
The College of Engineering is hiring an Operational Student Safety Technician to support safety initiatives, namely the inspections of CENG laboratories and club spaces. This is part of the College’s commitment to providing a safe, supportive environment for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors.  

The appointment will start immediately and continue for the 2023-24 academic year. Work-related training will be provided, and the Operational Student Safety Tech will meet regularly with other staff and faculty to help both parties complete safety-related tasks. 

Duties will vary throughout the term but include helping to prepare and organize standard operating procedures (SOP) for safe usage of equipment and lab activities, helping students develop their own SOPs for club activities and projects, helping develop a system to track safety issues and their resolution, working with faculty and staff as part of the college safety committee, and defining training and responsibilities for future Student Safety Techs.  

More specific responsibilities will include: 

Support safety management within all CENG labs  
  • Perform monthly inspections of all CENG labs, including but not limited to eyewash stations, emergency showers, and fire extinguishers  
  • Identify problem areas by frequency/type of problem/type of area  
  • Perform regular inspections of all CENG EH&S hazardous waste storage containers
  • Report safety infractions or unsafe storage conditions to the responsible department and CENG safety representatives  
  • Follow up on reports to ensure action has been taken on any safety infractions  
  • Make safety recommendations to department safety representatives  

Maintain CENG safety databases  
  • Maintain a database of inspection reports within the CENG  
  • Maintain a database of all hazardous waste storage sites within the CENG  
  • Keep and manage detailed records of all safety checks for future audits  
  • Develop instructions and training procedures for tasks relating to this position 
  
Qualifications  
  • Interest in safety  
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills (written and verbal)  
  • Ability to work independently  
  • Takes initiative  
  • Strong organizational skills 
  • Experience in lab/shop environments or participation in clubs/projects is desired 
  • Comfortable with technical writing 
  • Ability to work approximately 10 hours/week during the school year
