Research Assistant - Stanford Health Policy
Stanford Health Policy is seeking a Research Assistant (Social Science Research Professional 1) to support research activities for the Prevention Policy Modeling Lab (PPML) within the Department of Health Policy. PPML engages in innovative, multi-disciplinary research on public health policy, with a particular focus on infectious diseases in the Unites States and globally. PPML develops models that incorporate evidence-based prevention strategies, emphasizing cross-cutting initiatives and producing results that can be operationalized within healthcare and other sectors.
Duties include:
- Plan and perform research tasks requiring initiative and judgment by applying basic knowledge and understanding of scientific theory. Assist with advancing research projects through completion of tasks during project planning, analysis, publication and dissemination, and reporting to funding agencies.
- Identify, select, extract, and summarize data and structured information. Conduct descriptive analysis of data.
- Conduct literature searches and write literature summaries and manuscripts. Assist with project planning and model parameterization by reviewing current literature, clinical guidelines, and other relevant data sources.
- Build and organize data as requested by principal investigator or supervisor; use common statistical programs such as R, and collaborative version control platforms including GitHub.
- Adapt new, nonstandard methods outlined by supervisor in designing and evaluating phases of research projects. Work with PI and Program Manager to obtain and track Data Use Agreements through all relevant institutions and assist with Institutional Review Board protocols.
- Assist with development, communication, and design of research findings to internal and external audiences, which may include website content, policy briefs, etc. Assist with opportunities for dissemination of publications and guidance.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Interest in infectious disease prevention, public health policy, and/or decision science.
- Knowledge or experience working with statistical or simulation models.
- Experience working with statistical software packages, such as R or Python. Experience working with GitHub for version control and public dissemination of code is helpful.
- Ability to interpret and summarize data from various sources.
- Experience in data visualization, preparing tables and graphs, and communicating results.
- Ability to work across multiple research teams and communicate priorities across diverse groups. Strong oral presentations skills.
- Effective written communicator who can write clearly and professionally through scientific reports and other forums.
- Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite for document creation and sharing, communication, presentations, and reports.
- Strong interpersonal skills for engaging with coworkers, research collaborators, and other staff.
- Detail-orientated and excellent organizational skills. Comfortable working independently.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Bachelor of Arts degree in an applicable social science related field, or combination of education and relevant experience in an applicable social science.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
- General understanding of scientific theory and methods, typically gained through completion of an undergraduate degree in a related field.
- General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs.
- Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
- Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work with human study participants
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
- Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
- Occasionally stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, writing by hand, and sort/file paperwork or parts.
- Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, kneel/crawl, rarely reach/work above shoulders, and operates foot and/or hand controls.

The expected pay range for this position is $48,000 to $71,000 per annum.
Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
