HSPOSITION TITLE:English Learner Counselor
JOB DESCRIPTION:Arlington Public Schools (APS) requires all employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 unless a medical or religious exemption is approved. Being fully vaccinated means that an individual is at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen (i.e. Pfizer, Moderna, and/or Johnson and Johnson). As a condition of employment, newly hired employees will be required to provide proof of their COVID-19 vaccination.
 
This position is a 1.0 FTE, school-based position, operating under the guidance of the Office of English Learners and the Counseling Department. This professional will provide direct services to newly arrived English Learners. These services include but are not limited to, individual counseling, group counseling, crisis interventioin, family reunification, acculturation, and trauma support. Students may be referred by teachers, administrators, school counselors, nurses, school staff, parents and/or self. The Counselor should be willing to collaborate with other professionals to ensure appropriate and meaningful suppport. This professional may be reassigned, typically on a yearly basis, to meet the needs of EL students and families based on changes in enrollment.
  • RESPONSIBILITIES:Ability to communicate and work effectively with principal, staff and parents.
  • Ability and willingness to work as a team member with special education and general education staff.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to compromise.
  • Good initiative, flexibility, dependability and organizational skills.
  • Strong sense of professionalism.
  • Strong classroom management skills.
 
  • EXPERIENCE:
  • Teaching experience in the above mentioned areas

  • Knowledge of best instructional practices

  • Ability to integrate technology

  • Experience in educational and instructional leadership

  • QUALIFICATIONS:Must have or be eligible for Virginia licensure.
  • Must be Bilingual (English & Spanish).
  • Counseling endorsement.
  • Dual endorsement in English as a Second Language and/or Special Education, or in any other content area, is preferred but not required.
