New Coug Student Leader
Job description/duties/responsibilities:
This position is pending approval for funding. Interviewing will begin in May. The application will close once there is a strong applicant pool. You are encouraged to apply by May 8th.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
· Current WSU Vancouver undergraduate student enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits
· Minimum of 12 credits completed at WSU Vancouver by May 2023 and in good academic standing
· Ability to communicate and connect with students from all backgounds
· Willingness to take initiative and to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
· Genuine interest in helping students achieve success and serve as a positive academic role model; excited to help first-year student find a sense of community and belonging
· Excited to work on a team and ability to collaborate with others
Desired Skills:
· Excited about event planning and interested in learning more about what goes into making an event a reality; any previous experience planning events is a bonus
· Willingness to also take on administrative tasks and learn new tools: Emailing, Coug Presence, Canva, Outlook, Teams, Discord, etc.
Scheduling & Availability Requirements:
The majority of first year student events and courses take place on Fridays. The candidate will need to be available on Fridays from 9 AM- 4 PM during the fall 2023 semester. Actual hours may vary slightly based on the UNIV 104 schedule in the fall and 204 schedule in the spring. You also be expected to be in the office 3-5 hours a week to prep for events and check-ins with your success coach and first-year students.

Job description/duties/responsibilities:
• Collaborate on a team on coordinating and facilitating peer-to-peer event(s) that provide newly admitted students with information on seamlessly transitioning into college life, aid them in building community, and support them in navigating the resources in successful pursuit of higher education. This includes logistics’ planning, marketing creation and promotion, and coordinating with campus partners.
• Partner with ELCA Success Coaches as peer leaders in UNIV 250 courses to provide an intentional and transformative educational experience rooted in academic success and student persistence. Promote ELCA events and other opportunities for student involvement within the learning community.
• Co-Lead workshops at New Coug Orientation and co-curricular workshops.
• Assist in the planning and preparation for New Coug Orientation. Planning sessions in collaboration with designated success coach. Packing swag bags, printing materials, and day of support such as greeting students.
• Serve as peer mentors to first year freshman students and provide one-to-one and small group mentoring as needed.
• Regularly post updates about events on the Engaged Learning’s Discord channel and utilize the platform to create informal connections with your New Coug Learning Community.
• Connect students with the broader campus community and resources through event promotion, faculty, staff, upperclassmen introductions, and student interest groups/clubs and CILA.
• Plan and execute a student organized First Year Summit (A reflection and taking a step forward with confidence and determination into your college journey).
• Provide updates to the Lead Peer Mentor and Assistant Campus Director of Engaged Learning on event attendance and any student feedback for improvement.
• Complete inventory of supplies as needed
Job roles:
• A peer-to-peer approach to improving low persistence, retention, and graduation rates for students from historically underserved and under-resourced populations by engaging in solutions that bridge academic gaps and increase student success momentum.
