Project CARE Manager
Cleveland Animal Protective League is looking for a driven community welfare professional with program management and event planning experience to join our team!

The Cleveland Animal Protective League believes in maintaining the human-animal bond whenever possible and that no owner should have to make a decision about keeping their pet based on their ability to pay for veterinary care. This is an important role within the organization and will be focused on our Community Animal Retention Effort (CARE) with the goal of helping owners retain their pets during times of hardship.
Services currently offered to project CARE area residents include:
- Low-cost spay/neuter (those outside of the project CARE target area may be eligible to schedule with the Community Pet Clinic).
- One-time emergency medical assistance through our Peticaid program (restrictions apply).
- Low-cost flea treatment/preventative.
- Counseling help with behavioral and medical needs and general care guidance.
- Resource referrals to other programs.
- Emergency assistance with pet food on as needed basis.

What you’ll do?
- Coordinates all aspects of project CARE, ensuring APL is a proactive resource for the community
- Continues to expand resources and social services support provided by project CARE including, but not limited to, a formalized pet food pantry, transportation assistance, and a Crisis Safety Net program
- Works closely with and trains Adoptions, Animal Resource Center, and Community Pet Clinic teams to ensure consistent and non-judgmental messaging and support for all clients reaching out to APL for assistance
- Engages in and oversees proactive outreach to pet owners in targeted area to assess needs and provide a plan to address those needs with education, available resources, and advice
- Coordinates Peticaid, including client approval (working closely with supervisor and Head of Veterinary Services) and scheduling for service, data collection, and client follow-up
- Maintains current and establishes new community partnerships within targeted communities including, but not limited to, local businesses, faith-based organizations, social services organizations, schools, animal hospitals, rescue groups, etc.
- Organizes all aspects of targeted wellness clinics, either in community or at the APL; coordinates and trains staff and volunteers to ensure event success
- Creates and distributes marketing materials
- Works with Volunteer Manager to recruit and train volunteers to meet needs of the program
- Keeps accurate and up-to-date records of services provided, contacts, vendors, and local resources
- Measures success of program based on data collected, including, but not limited to, use of services by the community
What we’re looking for:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; college degree in Social Work or related field or equivalent work experience strongly preferred
- Minimum one year work experience in a supervisory or management role required
- Previous program and event planning experience required
- Knowledge and understanding of animal breeds and temperament strongly preferred
- Highly dependable, able to multi-task and manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Is flexible with scheduling and is available when away from the facility as needed to meet the needs of the organization; shifts may include varied hours/days, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed
- Fear Free Certified or must become certified within six months of hire
- Certified euthanasia technician or ability to become certified within six months of hire
- Must possess an Ohio’s driver’s license with an insurable driving record
- Candidate must have their own reliable transportation and auto insurance

Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Supervises pC client care associates and social worker. Assesses, respects, and addresses staff needs immediately.
- Performs supervisory duties, including reviewing work performance, motivating subordinates to work more effectively, identifying problems with performance and solutions to those problems, determining training needs to improve performance, initiating measures to correct misconduct per APL policy. Carries out approved disciplinary actions.
- Provides orientation, training, and supervision to employees, volunteers, and students. Prepares and presents necessary evaluations and performance appraisals.
- Ensures compliance with APL animal care, safety, and personnel practices and procedures
- Respects and addresses staff concerns immediately
- Orients new staff and ensures staff is trained and coached to a level necessary to achieve the APL’s mission and goals. Coaches staff by providing regular, ongoing feedback and training
- Promotes teamwork, communication, and cooperation between APL departments; ensures staff provide high-quality, positive interactions with clients and co-workers.
- Oversees, schedules, and manages volunteers to assist with outreach efforts by assigning responsibilities that best fit their skill set
- Assists with the development of training and orientation materials and implements training for staff/volunteers on the resources available via project CARE and requirements for program participation
- Performs the duties of subordinate employees as needed
