CDC Workforce Development Opportunity in Presidential Management Fellowship

CDC Office and Location A fellowship opportunity is currently available in the Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Laboratory Services (CSELS); at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in the Division of Scientific Education and Professional Development, in the Public Health Workforce Branch to participate in CDC's Presidential Management Fellowship program.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
Research ProjectUnder the guidance of a mentor, the research participants will learn how to conduct activities focused on enhancing the leadership workforce capacity at CDC. The participants will have the opportunity to collaborate directly within the leadership team within the branch, providing programmatic support on all aspects of the fellowship implementation, including health communication, data science, project management, and evaluation.
Learning ObjectivesAdditionally, the fellows may be involved in the following training activities: 
  • Design, evaluate, research, and improve upon methods used to collect, process, analyze and integrate new and existing data sources that are managed by the branch
  • Research and learn to utilize project management and automation software to manage program data from a variety of data sources and reach out to large audiences through online trainings
  • Learn resource needs/utilization for training programs
  • Help identify novel data sources, software, and analytic tools, including associated strengths and weaknesses
  • Contribute to the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for program management and development as needed for revised or new processes
  • Participate in other projects within the branch as needed related to program/project management 
  • Participate in other projects within the branch as needed related to health communications/project management to reporting/communication needs
  • Contribute to the development of dashboards and reports to support program management and program evaluation
  • Triage joint inbox requests from fellows, host sites, and outside requestors
  • Research, identify, and plan trainings for the program
  • Assist and support a leadership program at CDC in all program aspects

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: December 5, 2022. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment LengthThe appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of ParticipationThe appointment is full-time.
Participant StipendThe participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship RequirementsThis opportunity is available to U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR).
ORISE InformationThis program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor's or master's degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within the past five years.
Preferred skills:
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with Microsoft suite of products including SharePoint, Teams, Forms, Outlook, Excel, Word etc.
  • Experience with power automate and mail merge
  • Solid data analysis and program evaluation skills
  • Interest in workforce development and training
  • Project management experience (Microsoft Project, Microsoft Office Suite, etc.)
  • Experience with data science and visualization tools (PowerBI, etc.)
  • Experience providing friendly customer service to internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience with planning hybrid events for large audiences
