HBCU / MSI Internship Program - Emergency Management Recovery Internship
The Emergency Management Recovery Intern(s) selected for this opportunity will work to develop a resource directory about a designated region of North Carolina that will benefit the Recovery Section of North Carolina Emergency Management and its stakeholders.
The resource directories created from this internship project will be used by North Carolina Emergency Management in preparedness planning, recovery response, and damage assessment inquiry when there are natural disasters such as hurricanes, floods, fire, ice storms, snow, or pandemic.
Work for this internship will include:
- Utilizing computers to search information regarding three regions of North Carolina: Western NC, Eastern NC, and Central NC
- Using data analytics in sorting and processing data and/or information
- Researching counties resources, populations, risk factors, and other areas of interest for inclusion in the resource directories
- Analyzing problems that impact responses to emergencies and hazards in the counties of interest, as well as relevant business problems
- Crafting resource directories from researched information to be used in long-term future work by North Carolina Emergency Management
The intern(s) selected for this opportunity will gain invaluable skills in the Emergency Management field to increase their current skillset, and will be adding direct value to this key initiative that will benefit the Emergency Management staff, and further their mission to help the people of North Carolina promote and support efficient and effective preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery activities in response to natural and man-made disasters.
Internship Dates: May 22nd - July 28th, 2023
Hours: Monday - Friday (this internship is eligible for part time telework)
Compensation: $15 hourly

About NC Emergency Management:
The mission of North Carolina Emergency Management (NCEM) is to enhance the State of North Carolina's resiliency levels by fostering active collaboration, communication, and coordination between local, state, and federal stakeholders, as well as maintaining meaningful relationships and providing services for private citizens and commercial entities. This is achieved through promoting strategies which support efficient and effective preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery activities in response to threats from a variety of natural and man-made hazards. NCEM is part of the North Carolina Department of Public Safety (NC DPS).
About the Recovery Section:
The NCEM Recovery Section manages Public Assistance and Individual Assistance Grant Programs for both state and federally declared disasters.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Applicants must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor's, Master's, or professional-level program at an accredited North Carolina Historically Black College or University (HBCU) or Minority Serving Institution (MSI) in any major
- Applicants must have a 2.5 or higher GPA (on a 4.0 scale)
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Applicants must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor's, Master's. or professional-level program at an accredited North Carolina Historically Black College or University (HBCU) or Minority Serving Institution (MSI) in any major
- Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale)
- Applicants must demonstrate GPA by attaching a transcript (official or unofficial)
