Algorithm Development Intern

Basic Function 
 
As a part of the Engineering team, the Intern will help create and deploy the optimization models and power flow algorithms for the renewable energy assets.   
 
Duties and Responsibilities 
  • Initiate, create, test, deploy and debug the optimization algorithms for optimal dispatch of the assets mainly solar, storage and loads  
  • Collaborate closely with the a group of software engineers and product managers  
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to act as primary contributor for algorithm development.  
  • Collaborate with the engineering and innovating team in the high level design of data models, and software systems. 

Qualifications/Requirements: 
  • Degree (Bachelors, Masters or Ph.D) in Computer Science, Physics, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Statistics, Operational Research or a related field 
  • Experience in mathematical optimization algorithms (linear and non-linear) – experience in energy models is a plus.  
  • Experience developing energy management solutions using model predictive controls 
  • Experience in programming is a plus  
  • Familiar with the US Energy Sector, energy storage revenue streams, and generation optimal dispatch  
  • Familiar with Electric power industry domain experience with demonstrated understanding of renewable energy, power systems, wholesale power markets, and Smart Grid technologies. 
  • knowledge of energy system asset management 
  • Familiar with machine learning algorithms for energy and price forecasting  
  • Ability to understand and model value streams, incentives and constraints applicable to front-of-the-meter and behind-the-meter battery storage systems operations 
  • Currently in a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD program with an emphasis in Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geography, Environmental Science, or Mathematics/Physics required 
  • Experience with data analysis and presentation, preferably in Python, R, MATLAB, or other programming environment. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word 
  • Strong written and verbal English language communication skills 
  • Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills 
  • Educational focus on Renewable Energy and/or Energy Storage preferred 
  • Hands on experience with photovoltaic modules, power electronics, or Li-ion and flow battery systems preferred 
  • The ability to potentially lift items as heavy as 30lbs. 
  • Familiar with control methodology for battery system including communication with inverter, DC-DC converters, and relays. 
  • Excellent debugging and troubleshooting skills to solve challenging problems. 
  • Strong fundamental knowledge of BMS and EMS functionality and key metrics of battery systems. 
  • Firmware design experience is a plus. 
  • Experienced with communication protocols such as MODBUS TCP/IP 
  • Familiarity with optimization models and forecasting methods (ANL) are preferred. 
 
Travel Requirements 
The position requires up to 25% domestic travel and up to 50% onsite presence at pilot projects at SolarTAC in Denver, CO
