Community Outreach Intern

The ACLU of Vermont seeks a highly motivated student Community Outreach Intern to support and coordinate community engagement and outreach efforts during the summer of 2023. This is a 10-week, 30 - 40 hour per week, paid student internship. Start and end dates are flexible.

The Intern will work with our Advocacy and Outreach Manager to help shape our organizing program by utilizing the strength of the ACLU’s growing network of members, supporters, and volunteers to advance ACLU advocacy in Vermont communities. As we face unprecedented challenges to civil liberties, the ACLU of Vermont is taking our statewide advocacy to the next level by strengthening our litigation and legislative capacity, expanding public engagement strategies, and creating a new infrastructure for issue campaigns and electoral engagement. That includes data-driven campaign strategies and amplified communications and organizing tactics to fight for civil rights and civil liberties—and win.

Location

The Intern will work primarily from our Montpelier office, or from home during designated remote days, and will participate in in-person events across the state. Attendance at events and in-office work requirements will be dependent on the ACLU of Vermont’s COVID safety and Hybrid Office Model policies which are regularly updated based on available health and safety guidance.


Primary Responsibilities

The Intern will report to the Advocacy and Outreach Manager, work closely with the Advocacy Director and the communications team. The Intern will help expand our organizing infrastructure, strengthen partnerships with key stakeholders – prioritizing directly impacted communities and individuals – and coordinate with office staff to track progress and win on priority campaign goals.

Responsibilities may include:
· Working with the Advocacy and Outreach Manager in collaboration with advocacy and communications teams to develop and implement strategies to build and utilize a base of ACLU members, volunteers, and community members in support of the ACLU of Vermont’s campaign goals.
· Recruiting, training, assisting, and mobilizing an active volunteer base to participate in events, and support public education and advocacy.
· Helping develop and implement strategies to extend our support among younger Vermonters and bring new voices to our campaigns. · Assisting in organizing both small and large-scale public events statewide to educate and mobilize ACLU of Vermont supporters and the broader public for specific advocacy priorities.
· Tabling at community events to engage with potential supporters. Tabling events may include state fairs, county fairs, farmers markets, rallies, etc.
· Identifying and recruiting potential volunteers and spokespeople for our campaigns.
· Assisting in content creation for external communications related to priority issues and campaigns.
· Performing data entry.
· Phone Banking in support of priority campaigns.


Qualifications

· A demonstrated commitment to civil liberties and civil rights, and an understanding of and appreciation for the ACLU’s values, mission, and goals.
· Ability to work independently and to keep organized in a fast-paced environment and adjust to changing demands. A team-oriented personality, a desire to learn and grow.
· A commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion; a personal approach that values the individual and respects differences of race, ethnicity, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, religion, ability, and socio-economic circumstance.
· Willingness to engage with members of the public over the phone, through electronic communications, and at in person events.
· Proficiency with computers, Microsoft Office software, database management, and various web platforms.
· A valid driver’s license or driver’s privilege card, reliable vehicle, and willingness to travel around the state.
· Ability to work irregular hours, and to attend evening and weekend meetings when necessary.


Compensation

$20 per hour with reimbursement for approved mileage and expenses.
