The University of Texas at Arlington has partnered with Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) to create an unprecedented opportunity for you to be included in a yearlong UTA Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) Transportation Leadership Academy.
The Academy is intended for students who are promising leaders with a reputation for intellect, thoughtfulness, collaboration, and commitment. Candidates should be interested in public service in the transportation industry and be open to full-time employment immediately following graduation.
This experience includes a scholarship, paid fall internship, and a series of leadership sessions hosted in the spring semester.

The UTA Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) program will provide students with an opportunity to:
- Develop real-world experience by working as a paid DART intern .
- Develop leadership skills by interacting with DART executives.
- Learn and experience a detailed and all-encompassing understanding of business and community needs related to DART, including sessions with key executives to understand how each area within DART operates.
- Receive an in-depth look at the transportation industry, including how DART’s surrounding cities work to make robust and progressive initiatives for changing demographics now and in the future.
- Potentially be interviewed for employment at DART or at the conclusion of the Transportation Leadership Academy.
Candidate Opportunities and Expectations
Students who accept this opportunity will participate in the following as part of the Transportation Leadership Academy:
- A paid internship during the fall semester.
- Spring leadership sessions
- 2 hours weekly in the Spring semester, Thursdays, 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm (will include discussions with DART vice presidents).
- Absences beyond those allotted in the program and/or failure to complete activities may result in removal from the Transportation Leadership Academy and/or forfeiture of the student scholarship.
- Bus tour or rail tour. To be determined. Tours will be held on a Saturday at DART from 10 AM to 12 noon. More details to follow regarding exact dates and times for tours. Your flexibility is appreciated.
- Attendance of all program orientation sessions
- If invited, participants are strongly encouraged to participate in the DART interview process for full-time employment.
- An exit interview with UTA Career Center
- Completion of the candidate profile. Upon graduation, the student will share updated contact information, job destination, and position title to complete DART records.
DART Scholarship
Successful applicants who complete all requirements and are selected for the program will receive a monetary scholarship to be divided and applied for the fall and spring semesters. Students receiving the fall scholarship will likely receive the award after tuition payment is required and should make other arrangements to cover fall tuition and fees. Recipients must meet with a financial aid representative to discuss how the funds will impact the candidate’s financial profile.
Who Should Apply?
- Undergraduate Senior students with a background or interest in architecture, urban and suburban planning, IT, web and app development, accounting, finance, marketing, transportation, and software engineering. (The academy will consider all majors)
- Students must be on track to graduate in the spring following the DART leadership sessions
- Full-time enrollment during the academic year.
- Students applying must have an overall GPA of 2.8 or above.
- The application is only open to citizens of the United States and those with a valid Green Card who are legally authorized to work in the United States.
Selection Timeframe
Students may be contacted regarding their application status before the close of the spring semester. Candidate selections will be announced near the end of the spring semester or early summer.
