Post Doctorate RA - In-situ Microreactor Development (6857)
The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) leads novel and necessary research in three core areas: Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Environmental Molecular Sciences. The contributions of EBSD staff are many as we continue to elevate the impact of PNNL's science mission: to understand, predict, and control the complex adaptive systems underlying the science behind Earth, energy, and security.
The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and The Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL), a national scientific user facility supported by the U.S. DOE Office of Biological and Environmental Research, seeks an outstanding candidate for a postdoctoral position working on multimodal in-situ studies of aerosol-gas phase processes, with a primary focus on synchrotron-based Scanning Transmission X-ray Microscopy (STXM) measurements at the Advanced Light Source, and mass spectrometry analyses at EMSL. The project involves developing an advanced in-situ atmospheric particle reaction cell and performing novel in-situ chemical imaging of aerosol systems under variable atmospheric conditions to unravel processing pathways of biological and other complex suspended particles, in addition to other related activities.
The candidate should have experience with/knowledge in different analytical capabilities such as X-ray microscopy/ spectroscopy and/or scientific instrument development including data acquisition, data processing/analysis. Experience in the use of data analysis tools, such as Matlab, R, or Python will be preferred. Experience with electrical circuits, instrument interfacing in above mentioned research areas is preferred. Experience with x-ray spectroscopy experiments including those performed at synchrotrons is a plus. The candidate is expected to perform experiments and analyze data, participate in manuscript preparation for publication, and present results in high-level conferences. The candidate is also expected to engage in collaboration activities with team members from atmospheric, biological, and environmental science.
The successful candidate will possess strong organizational and time management skills; the ability to multi-task; demonstrated ability to make independent and well-informed analyses and decisions; and excellent written and oral communication skills. Experience working on interdisciplinary teams and/or inter-institutional teams, is preferred.
The project is expected to involve travel to synchrotron beamlines as part of the development and implementation of the in situ cell.
- Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
- Must have direct experience and expertise in at least one field related to scientific instrument development
- Must have some basic training in programming and electrical circuits design
