Job Description

Overview

The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) leads novel and necessary research in three core areas: Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Environmental Molecular Sciences. The contributions of EBSD staff are many as we continue to elevate the impact of PNNL's science mission: to understand, predict, and control the complex adaptive systems underlying the science behind Earth, energy, and security.

Responsibilities

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and The Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL), a national scientific user facility supported by the U.S. DOE Office of Biological and Environmental Research, seeks an outstanding candidate for a Post Master’s Research Associate position working on multimodal in-situ studies of aerosol-gas phase processes, with a primary focus on synchrotron-based Scanning Transmission X-ray Microscopy (STXM) measurements at the Advanced Light Source, and mass spectrometry analyses at EMSL. The project involves developing an advanced in-situ atmospheric particle reaction cell and performing novel in-situ chemical imaging of aerosol systems under variable atmospheric conditions to unravel processing pathways of biological and other complex suspended particles, in addition to other related activities.

The candidate should have experience with/knowledge in different analytical capabilities such as X-ray microscopy/ spectroscopy and/or scientific instrument development including data acquisition, data processing/analysis. Experience in the use of data analysis tools, such as Matlab, R, or Python will be preferred. Experience with electrical circuits, instrument interfacing in above mentioned research areas is preferred. Experience with x-ray spectroscopy experiments including those performed at synchrotrons is a plus. The candidate is expected to perform experiments and analyze data, participate in manuscript preparation for publication, and present results in high-level conferences. The candidate is also expected to engage in collaboration activities with team members from atmospheric, biological, and environmental science.
