Geographical Information Systems Intern

POSITION:                 GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS INTERN

SALARY RANGE:    $15.00-$24.00

Chatham County Government’s Engineering Department has two (2) Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Intern openings. You are encouraged to apply if you meet the minimum qualifications.         
 
Job Summary: Under the direction of the Environmental Program Manager, you will provide support and assistance to the Engineering Department with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) related projects, including inspection of stormwater infrastructure, collection of required geographical data, and entry of information into the GIS database. Your knowledge of GIS principles and practices and National Pollutant Discharge Elimination Systems (NPDES) will be valuable as you assist Engineering staff with maintaining compliance with State and County NPDES MS4 permit requirements. You will complete inspection reports, perform data entry, and enter mapping information into the GIS System. You will perform tasks that support engineering analysis, report production, and designs. You may assist with stream walks and investigative assignments. You will collect, organize, and evaluate data. Your outstanding communication and customer service skills are needed as you interact with other Engineering staff and the public. Your work may be performed individually or as part of a team. Other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Completion of at least two (2) years at a college or university, pursuing a degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Sciences, Soil Sciences, Geographic Information Systems, Environmental Sciences, Soil Sciences, Land Use Planning, Engineering, Geology, Chemistry, Biology, or a related field; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training. Interest or experience in data collection software and techniques is desirable, You must possess a valid driver’s license.

Note: During emergencies and disasters affecting Chatham County, you may be required to report to work as part of a disaster operations team.
