Additive Manufacturing Co-op

The Novelis Global Research and Technology team is seeking an Additive Manufacturing Co-op. The person in this role will report to the Forming Cluster and Joining and Additive Manufacturing Cluster Engineers. The ideal candidate will be responsible for additively manufactured operational tooling replacements, development/ testing rapid prototypes for material forming, and maintaining additive manufacturing lab work orders and equipment preventative maintenance. This position will grow additive manufacturing capability within Novelis, deliver cost saving impact through innovative engineering design, and improve world class manufacturing excellence. 

Responsibilities: 
  • Utilize design for additive principles in the development and testing a prototype for a coolant nozzle replacement in an industrial application. Interface with internal and external resources to manage the manufacture of nozzle components and their performance testing. 
  • Utilize design for additive principles in the development and testing of lab scale forming tooling - low cost and rapid manufacture of die components to facilitate forming evaluations such as light gauge forming or springback evaluation on coupon level samples. 
  • Interface with external vendors to obtain quotes and facilitate the AM metal production of prototype components. Assess quality and determine if feasible for application.  
  • Support of lab submitted requests, scheduled additive lab equipment upkeep, equipment part replacement ordering, and dynamic material inventory to maintain full operating status. 
 
Minimum Qualifications: 
 
  • Mechanical Engineering or associated engineering student Sophomore, Junior, or Senior 
  • Operational knowledge of CAD modeling software (Autodesk Inventor or Fusion 360 preferred) 
  • Strong communication skills and a safety-oriented mindset 
  • Comfortable working with hand tools and basic electrical systems 
  • Prior exposure and understanding of FDM additive processes 
  • Comfortable working in a project team environment to achieve collective business goals 
  • Eager self-starter willing to learn about additive manufacturing technologies and processes 
  • Effectively manage communication with stakeholders, manage project expectations and delivery of agreed upon targets / milestones  
 
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Familiarity with working with chemicals in a lab setting and proper use of personal protective equipment 
  • Experience or exposure to Additive Manufacturing technologies and processes outside of fused deposition modelling (i.e., SLA, SLM, or DED) 
  • Experience with mesh model management software (Materialise Magics) for 3D component design 
  • Familiarity or experience with DFAM - design for additive manufacturing principles 
 
What we offer: 
This role has a pay range from $19 to $26 hourly.
