Data Engineer Intern
The Tennessee Reading Research Center is hiring a Data Engineer Intern to assist our Research Data Engineer. Pay is $15 per hour for undergraduates or $20 per hour for graduate students. The expected time commitment is 12 hours of work per week. Applicants must be current UTK students.
Responsibilities:
● Write code in R, and at times, Python, to solve data engineering tasks.
● Generate CSV files, PDF reports, formatted Excel spreadsheets, PNGs, and log files using code.
● Review, standardize, clean, format, and export data tables in R.
● Deidentify, document, and organize code and corresponding files across different projects.
● Help maintain an R package; write test cases for, document, and debug R package functions.
● Transfer data between different locations (such as SQL databases) and file types.
● Help create and compile written resources regarding R and data engineering.
Preferred Qualifications
Computer science and other relevant majors are preferred. A strong desire to learn and the ability to learn independently on the job are required. Experience with R, Python, C, and/or C++ is required. Strong skills with object-oriented programming (OOP), debugging code, and writing detailed documentation are critical. An understanding of some of the following advanced concepts is preferred: regular expressions, time complexity, object mutability, lexical scoping, higher-order functions, polymorphism, type coercion, and lazy evaluation.
