Job Description:
This is a 20-hour per week, daytime position. Hourly starting pay expected to be between $14 - 17 per hour, depending on experience.
SUMMARY:
Performs complex copy cataloging of print and digital resources concerned with genealogy and local history.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
This class specification lists the major duties and requirements of the job and is not all-inclusive. Incumbent(s) may be expected to perform job-related duties other than those contained in this document and may be required to have specific job-related knowledge and skills.
• Performs complex editing to improve, enhance, and adapt bibliographic records according to current local and international guidelines in all languages.
• Collaborates with colleagues on more difficult cataloging decisions and cataloging processes.
• Maintains ongoing accuracy and integrity of the genealogy portion of the catalog database and resolves discrepancies. Performs special database maintenance projects as needed.
• Considers LC requirements for RDA, Library of Congress subject heading policies, and locally established modified Dewey Decimal Classification.
• Ensures all materials can be retrieved using standardized methods in the most efficient way.
• Conducts complex research using common cataloging tools (Library of Congress and international authorities files, OCLC Connexion) and genealogy databases.
• Assists in physically processing materials.
• Promotes and supports the overall mission of the Library by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with public and staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.
QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education and Experience: Bachelor’s Degree; AND two (2) years of library operations experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Required Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:
Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.
• State of Indiana Public Librarian Certification (LC5).
Required Knowledge and Skills Required Knowledge:
• Library policies and procedures.
• Principles and practices of cataloging utilizing the Dewey Decimal Classification, Library of Congress Subject Headings, MARC records, cataloging aids and RDA standards.
• Research techniques and practices.
• Application of Library of Congress name and subject headings.
• Computer applications and technical equipment related to the work.
• Automated library systems, on-line tools and resources.
• Record keeping principles and practices.
• Correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
• Techniques for working with a variety of individuals from various socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
Required Skills:
• Using automated library systems and resources.
• Performing research.
• Resolving the complex problems specific to a special collection having resources in various languages and formats from multiple cultures and time periods.
• Preparing clear and concise reports, correspondence and other materials. • Using initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines.
