Arava Institute for Environmental Studies Internship - Fall 2023

Semester Internship at the Arava Institute
Are you interested in supporting research to find solutions to climate change? Dedicated to the concept that nature knows no borders, the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies brings together Jordanian, Israeli, Palestinian, and international students and interns for a semester of study in southern Israel focused on our shared environmental resources. A semester at the Institute offers a unique opportunity to learn from leading scientists, form friendships, and develop skills to help solve today’s most pressing environmental concerns.

About the Internship
Interns contribute substantively to transboundary research through a defined project under the direction of an Arava Institute researcher, while gaining valuable professional, academic, and personal experience over one or two semesters. In addition to research, interns will work with the program cohort on peace-building dialogue designed to increase understanding of the conflicts, history of the region, and importance of working together for our most important resources.

Interns develop skills in environmental research and development, environmental policy, and project management, while gaining important professional contacts. In addition to building effective community-based and professional partnerships, interns gain access to the global network of accomplished Arava Institute alumni.

Who Should Apply
The Arava Institute welcomes interns from varied backgrounds, including the social and the natural sciences. Advanced undergraduate students who need work experience for their degree or co-op, or recent graduates looking to boost their resume join the Institute as interns for a semester or year for hands-on research, based in one of our research centers or with our communications department.

Cost
The program cost is $6,000 per semester, which covers room, board (a full meal plan in the kibbutz dining room), office space, supervisory and administrative expenses, health insurance, and participation in academic activities and field trips. Many participants utilize scholarships to pay for their program. If you have questions about funding your experience, reach out to Lily Andrules at lily@friendsofarava.org

Testimonials
Juliet was an American intern at the Institute’s Center for Transboundary Water Management in fall of 2023 and is a 2022 NYU grad.

"The most interesting part of the internship is having the opportunity to go to the sites and interact with the NGO's, representatives and government officials, as well as the engineers. . .  Sustainability here, for me, means resiliency and independence. That is, finding solutions that help build resilience in the face of environmental and geopolitical changes."
