About the Department 

The Geology-Mathematics-Physics (GMP) Library is part of the Science & Engineering Libraries (SEL) at the University of Cincinnati. This position works closely with SEL librarians to enrich the academic experience through the development and promotion of special collections and rare books in the sciences, including the collections of the Cincinnati Observatory, the UC Herbarium, and the nationally-recognized Oesper Collections in the History of Chemistry. Prepares physical exhibits, displays and promotional materials that highlight library services and science libraries collections.
 

Job Overview

This position oversees core library operations for the Geology-Mathematics-Physics (GMP) Library at the University of Cincinnati. These responsibilities include: managing the Geology-Mathematics-Physics (GMP) Library service desk, responding to user questions and requests for library materials, overseeing the routine maintenance of library collection and spaces. Supervises student assistants at GMP and assists the Associate Director of Operations with supervision of students at other Science & Engineering Library (SEL) locations. At GMP, oversees all aspects of physical collections processing and access, including: receiving and preparing new materials for users, preparing binding and preservation requests, and library collections management (inventory, shelf-reading, collection assessments). 
 
May provide direct and/or indirect supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff (i.e., hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.). 
 
This position is a full-time, five-year term appointment.
 

Essential Functions

  • Oversees service desk and supervises operational student assistants at GMP Library.
  • Ensures high-quality customer service, attention to detail in user services, and accuracy in the completion of opening/closing processes and statistics gathering.
  • Covers service desks as necessary, performing circulation and reserves responsibilities. Responds to user requests and needs, referring to librarians, informationists and others as necessary. Interprets library policies and procedures.
  • Oversees student assignments at the desk and in the care and maintenance of physical library collections. Participates in and assists with the training of student assistants.
  • At GMP Library, processes new books, prepares binding tickets for periodicals, and identifies and prepares items in need of preservation treatment. Assists SEL Librarians with materials orders and tracking of acquisitions.
  • Oversees and assigns work with library collections management projects, including collections inventories, collection assessments, and the removal of items for storage/weeding. Leads projects to review library collections, such as analysis of print holdings at consortial/peer institutions and assessment of usage/online availability.
  • Develops, documents and promotes special collections and rare book holdings. Prepares content for exhibits, displays and other educational and promotional outlets. Assists in partnerships with other cultural institutions that create new pathways for research and regional connection.
  • Oversees routine maintenance for the GMP Library facility, including all individual and group spaces and technology. In coordination with the Research Data Services unit (also located in GMP Library), maintains the Visualization Laboratory and Data & GIS Collab. Monitors technology, submits help calls and identifies facility issues and needs to elevate to supervisor.
  • Lead contact for room scheduling/coordination at GMP Library, including reservations for group spaces. Assists with events in SEL locations, including those sponsored by Research Data Services.
  • Contributes to other special projects and initiatives in the Science and Engineering Libraries such as technology or facility initiatives. 
 

Required Education

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Five (5) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.
 

Required Experience

  • One (1) year of relevant work experience.

  • Recent supervisory experience, particularly with student employees.
  • Strong commitment to innovative and responsive library services.
  • Experience with operational management.
  • Demonstrated interest in library special collections, rare books or related materials.

  • Working knowledge of an integrated library system (ILS).
  • An educational or experiential background in the sciences.
