Upper School Principal

OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES
The Upper School Principal is responsible for supporting Nova’s students and teachers with dedication, enthusiasm, adaptability, kindness, passion, and energy. Much of the work of an Upper School Principal consists of overseeing licensed teachers and educational support staff, managing student behaviors and supervision, and overseeing upper school day-to-day operations. The Upper School Principal is employed at-will and operates as a professional within the guidelines established by Nova Classical Academy. In cooperation with Nova Classical staff and volunteers, the Upper School Principal works to fulfill the school’s mission in the following areas of responsibility: 

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
  • Provides leadership with teachers concerning instructional programs/curriculum
  • Promote positive school climate in accordance with Nova Classical’s virtues
  • Monitors the effectiveness of school practices and their impact on student learning
  • Completes formal annual evaluations for all Upper School staff members, encouraging professional growth and development through feedback
  • Manages day-to-day academic operations as needed including, but not limited to, administration of appropriate discipline for students as outlined within Nova Classical’s Code of Student Conduct and other items as assigned
  • Management of student trips (e.g. Senior Capstone) on an annual/biannual basis
  • Maintenance of records and files, including necessary research and report creation
  • Oversees faculty and staff with developing behavior management plans for students
  • Supports assessment coordinator in implementation of all state and national standardized tests
  • Attends committee meetings, including but not limited to Curriculum Committee, Academic Excellence Committee, etc.
  • Supervises school and extra-curricular activities outside of school hours
  • Plans, manages, and attends annual state, national, and international student trips
  • Lead staff meetings, and attend and/or lead other meetings with academic and school leadership, the community, students, and others, as needed
  • Adherence to Nova Classical policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Education, Educational Leadership, Educational Administration, or other related field
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven leadership skills and experience
  • Strong organizational skills

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
  • Current Minnesota State Principal or Education Administrator Licensure
  • Experience and/or familiarity with the classical model of education
  • Familiarity with testing and data review
  • Familiarity with restorative practices

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position and/or walk for periods of one hour or more
  • Duties are generally performed in an office and/or classroom setting, where some environmental hazards and/or risks may be present
  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects in the performance of the job
  • Must be able to exchange accurate information with students, teachers, parents, and staff
  • Regular operation of a computer or other office machines
  • Occasional or frequent standing for periods of 4 hours or more

JOB SUMMARY
The primary role of the Upper School Principal is to enhance the learning environment for students by providing effective, personalized attention; engaging in appropriate instructional and behavioral support; and, modeling intellectual and principled living by demonstrating character and intellectual virtues in accordance with Nova Classical Academy’s classical education tradition.
