Digital Communications Intern

Do you want to raise the public profile of education issues that are at the forefront of the national policy debate? If you answer yes to any of these questions, this communications internship opportunity with the Education Policy Program at New America (EPP) may be a good fit for you. This position allows you to work on many issues from early and elementary education through workforce development and adult learning.
The EPP communications intern is responsible for assisting in the development of communications activities to raise the public profile of the Education Policy Program, its work, and its staff using a variety of media tactics and channels. 
This position can be remote or hybrid based in Washington, DC. 
The internship runs approximately from the end of April through mid-December and can possibly be extended based on performance. The start and end dates are flexible.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist the communications manager with the creation of communications plans, media lists, pitches, and press releases for programs studying a variety of timely education policy issues
  • Assist in the management of EPP’s social media accounts, including creating, scheduling, and posting of content as well as live tweeting events
  • Monitor press coverage of New America, and assist in capturing all media mentions in Salesforce database
  • Attending, engaging in, and taking notes at sub-programmatic (internal client) team meetings 
  • Conduct research and analytics projects to help New America assess its impact
  • Update and ensure consistent quality of content posted to the New America website
  • Provide as-needed staffing support to education policy events
  • Undertake various short research and writing projects, and light administrative duties as needed
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
  • Excellent writing and communications skills, non-academic writing experience strongly preferred
  • Intellectual curiosity, motivation, and a desire to learn on the job
  • Applied media relations experience, including but not limited to creating media pitches and advisories 
  • Demonstrated interest in policy issues relevant to New America are preferred
  • Proofreading and copyediting skills
  • Experience or interest in website editing and CMS
  • Strong attention to detail, together with excellent organizational skills and time management
  • Prior experience in Salesforce, Google Analytics, email marketing, and/or social listening platforms is a plus
  • Technical expertise in areas like graphic design and editing (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Canva); mapping; data visualizations; or coding (HTML, JavaScript) is also a plus
