Specialty Camp Counselor - Southeast of Northwest

FLSA Status: Seasonal, Non-Exempt
Location: Positions available at our Southeast Y and Northwest Y branches
Reports to: Youth and Family Program Coordinators
Hourly Rate: $13.00 per hour
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Camp Counselor’s main task is to be a role model for campers. As a leader, the counselor is responsible for promoting friendship, fun, and rewarding experiences for campers in a safe, positive environment. Specialty Camp Counselors are responsible for developing and implementing detailed weekly activities for youth in our Specialty program. The themes of these programs will be different each week, so creativity and flexibility are a must. The age ranges will vary from week to week, and throughout the summer will include children ages 6-12.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Able to communicate effectively with campers, parents, and camp staff.
  • Personable and positive in your approach to learning and fun. 
  • Understand character development as chief mission of YMCA and personally exhibits a commitment to this goal in all YMCA operations.
  • Cooperate with fellow counselors.
  • Able to follow directives of Camp Leadership Team.
  • Attend all training sessions prior to camp and all meetings scheduled thereafter.
  • Participate in planning and preparation of each week’s activities. 
  • Update and prepare materials at least two weeks prior to starting session.
  • Prepare for the day’s events ahead of time and have all materials ready prior to 8:45 am.
  • Arrive at check-in no later than 8:45 am. Be available for questions, help out with reluctant children, or be at your assigned post.
  • Know and follow all YMCA emergency procedures.
  • Adhere to and enforce health and safety protocols, including, but not limited to, wearing a mask at all times for the duration of the camp day.
  • Know how many campers are present every day. Count campers at each change of activity: beginning, ending, and once in between.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Support YMCA mission and exemplify high personal character development.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills including listening first and relationship-building skills.
  • Leadership, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • A good understanding of risk management and safety in the workplace.
  • Self-motivated and service-minded attitude.
  • Staff must be available for the duration of summer camp, May 22 through July 28, with a maximum of 5 vacation days allowed. 
  • Staff must attend Mandatory Staff Development Training dates In order to work, staff must also complete First Aid, CPR, and BBP training before Camp begins on May 22. Please note these training programs are provided by the Organization
