Packaging Engineering Intern

Reporting to the Principal Packaging Engineer ; the Packaging Engineering Intern will support a variety of packaging Innovation & Renovation projects in support the objectives of the New Product Development (NPD) team. The ideal candidate must have a basic knowledge of a broad-range of packaging commodity types (e.g. poly film, corrugate, paperboard, etc.), to ensure product performance, food safety, and provide value to the customer while controlling overall costs. The Packaging Engineering Intern works closely with internal customers across multiple functional areas and will work with external suppliers to receive a real-life hands-on experience, coaching and mentoring, and networking opportunities within the Packaging Industry.

  • Simultaneously support multiple Innovation & Renovation projects under the supervision of the Principal Packaging Engineer from concept through commercialization using an established stage gate process to achieve business objectives
  • Develops and executes packaging qualification plans; reporting against predetermined key performance indicators to verify impact/mitigate risk of packaging changes and evaluate product and package performance
  • Challenges conventional thinking on packaging related subjects; implementing creative solutions to continuously improve business impact
  • Serves as the technical owner in the creation and maintenance of packaging specifications within SAP across all phases of development
  • Provide technical assistance to various internal departments to support business goals and will interact with ASR plant staff, internal customers as well as external vendors
  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Actively Enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree in Package Science or a related Engineering field from an accredited university
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. and must not require sponsorship for employment visa status now, or in the future (ex. H1-B, F-1)
  • A basic knowledge of a broad range of packaging materials and packaging equipment commonly found within the Food and Beverage or CPG Industries
  • Excellent problem solving skills, judgment and decision making supported by sound technical justification
  • Basic project management skills; ability to implement change across multiple objectives
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to apply critical thinking strategies when translating customer needs/insights to viable packaging concepts
  • Ability to apply analytical skills for data tracking and results analysis
  • Fundamental ability to understand broad business perspectives and apply that knowledge through project execution
  • Ability to utilize CAPE or equivalent and Microsoft Office Suite (specifically Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook)

  • English is the primary language of communication
  • Proficiency speaking/reading/writing in other languages such as Spanish or Portuguese is highly preferred
