Position Objective:
To assist the Park & Recreation Department with summer programming, including lesson planning, evening sports, field trips, special community events, and adult activities.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1.            Assist with recreation programs (planning, marketing, scheduling, supervision, and customer/program evaluations). Programming includes youth activities (ROCKS summer day camp, evening sports, and Rec N Roll), field trips, special events (Summer Concert Series, 49er Days, Nickel Jamboree, Wet & Wild Water Party), and adult activities.
2.            Develop lesson plans and special event curriculum for youth programs.
3.            Provide exceptional customer service by providing friendly, polite, and positive support to visitors, participants, staff, and community members.
4.            Assist with scheduling, create and implement staff training, and provide work direction for seasonal staff.
5.            Lead curriculum development throughout the season.
6.            Assist with promotion/marketing of department programs and activities including e-newsletters, social media, photography, creation of flyers/posters.
7.            Assist in administrative tasks (email, mailings, phone, etc.) including seasonal staff time entry and scheduling.
8.            Assist the Parks & Recreation department with various activities, as needed.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

1.            Currently enrolled in or recent graduate of degree program in Parks & Recreation, Education, or related field from an accredited college or university.
2.            Previous experience working with children/youth.
3.            Ability to work the entire summer season (May-August) with flexible daytime and evening hours, Monday – Friday. Occasional weekend work may occur.
4.            Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
5.            Must satisfactorily complete a criminal background and reference check process.
 
Desired Qualifications:
1.            One or more years of leadership experience (youth leader, etc.) with a community parks and recreation program.
 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1.            Ability to interact with the public in a positive manner.
2.            Ability to work independently and with people of all ages and abilities.
3.            Ability to work with diverse populations.
4.            Knowledge of the practices and methods of recreational programming.
5.            Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with a variety of audiences and groups.
6.            Ability to handle a variety of assignments under moderate supervision within standard operating procedures.
7.            Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and deal tactfully with internal and external customers, coworkers and partnering agencies.
 

Physical Demands & Working Conditions:

Work is performed in the office and in the field. Headaches, eyestrain, and other related occupational hazards reflect the most common potential for injury in the office. Work is moderate duty with ability to lift, carry or push up to 40 pounds. Exposure to weather conditions, insects, animals and to angry, hostile or uncooperative persons may occur.
