Assistant Lighting Designer

Assistant Lighting Designer

DATES
Pre-production in February & Late May through June 2023
 
For 27 years, the International Festival of Arts & Ideas (“Arts & Ideas”) has inspired and delighted audiences with an annual program of over 200 performing arts and humanities events year-round, at least 80% of which are free. 
 
Focused events in June range from world and nationally-renowned speakers sharing the stage with critical local voices for discussions on democracy, to jazz concerts, theatrical performances, dance; takeout mixology classes; bike and walking tours; and live, individual performances by local on-call artists on front lawns and sidewalks throughout the area. 
 
Year-round programs include special town-hall events, a fellowship program for youth, planning and implementing mini-festivals in New Haven’s culturally-rich neighborhoods, participation in the NEA Big Read, and our annual Visionary Leadership Award program.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist the LD on drafting designs
  • Lead Focus and or technical rehearsal in lieu of LD
  • Operation of venue lighting equipment
  • Supervision of and/or installation of ancillary temporary lighting equipment for venues such as dressing mirror lighting, running lights, etc.
  • Assistance in design, procurement and execution of power distribution system
  • Occasional phone consultation and attendance at pre-festival meetings concerning the lighting of Festival sites.
 
REQUIREMENTS
  • Prior experience in theatrical or festival lighting
  • Prior lighting design experience
  • Experience programming lighting consoles with intelligence fixtures
  • Works well with a team
  • Manages time efficiently
  • Good organizational skills
  • Proficient use of Vectorworks and AutoCAD
 
RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to the Production Manager 
Key Communication, Lighting Designer, Associate Lighting Designer, Master Electrician Associate Production Manager
 
COMPENSATION
$30.00 per hour

Arts & Ideas staff work in a hybrid fashion. Staff members are asked to use our offices as their home base three days per week and have the opportunity to work remotely the remainder of the week.
