Communications Intern

About the organization: Compass Family Services is a 100+ year old nonprofit working on the front lines of San Francisco’s homeless crisis. We provide families experiencing or at risk of homelessness with comprehensive support to address immediate needs and ensure long-term success.
Compensation: Unpaid internship
Schedule: 10-20 hours per week for 3-4 months starting in February 2023
Location: Hybrid. The intern should be available to work at our main office at 37 Grove Street in San Francisco on a regular basis; exact schedule TBD.

Position Description: The Communications Intern will work closely with the Communications Manager on a range of activities to broadcast Compass’ mission and work.

Specific responsibilities and learning opportunities:
  • Assist with the creation of social media materials and marketing collateral.
  • Enhance your writing skills by drafting and publishing social media posts and learning to copy-write from a brand voice.
  • Help to plan social media calendars, brainstorm ideas, and manage Compass accounts day to day.
  • Turn creative ideas into meaningful and interesting photo or video content.
  • Contribute to Compass’ social and content calendar (i.e. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter), source materials, and create relevant content for our various publications.

Qualifications:
  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree
  • Excellent written and verbal skills with a keen eye for detail and design
  • Passion for creating social media content and expanding our online reach and presence
  • Experience using social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn
  • Interest, background, and knowledge of social media, marketing, journalism, or social services
  • Preferred: Experience with design tools, social media management platforms such as Microsoft Office, Canva, and Buffer/Hootsuite

Compensation and Benefits:
  • This is an unpaid internship. Compass Family Services staff is happy to work with the intern to receive class credit if desired.

  • Covid vaccination required for all staff and volunteers, including booster when eligible.
  • Covid precautions in the workplace: required masking; enhanced air filtration and sanitizing.
