Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research (PAVIR) supports the nation's second largest research program conducted among the VA Hospitals and is looking for a Health Services Data Analyst. The Data Analyst in the Rose Lab will support a research program by using statistical software, such as R, stata, SQL, SAS, to understand the organization and delivery of care. The analyst is expected to create code that will extract and transform administrative datasets. The analyst will work with the PI to do basic analyses (computation of means, SD, variances), with the possibility of supporting more complicated analyses.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES OF A DATA ANALYST
  • Use statistical software, such as R, stata, SQL, SAS, to manipulate and analyze data on projects that are designed to understand the organization and delivery of care;
  • Identify and resolve database and analysis issues/problems;
  • Create code that will extract and transform administrative datasets;
  • Perform basic analyses (computation of means, SD, variances);
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR A DATA ANALYST
  • Required: Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience;
  • 1 year or more of related experience manipulating and analyzing large data sets;
  • Final candidates will be asked to complete a programming assessment to assess their skills.
  • Preferred: Background in a social science (e.g., economics or political science) with quantitative training. One year of additional schooling or work experience that required a significant amount of statistical programming;
  • Experience with large datasets (>100k records);
  • SAS, R or Stata programming;
  • Knowledge of Biostatistics and/or econometrics preferred.
  • Ability to work well both independently and in a collaborative team;
  • Ability to communicate data requirements, as well as limitations to team members;
  • Proficiency with MS Word;
  • Capability to produce reference documents and to outline work processes in writing.
