Environmental/Asthma Health Educators
Enthusiastic self-starters needed immediately for part-time and full-time jobs with variety and constant opportunity to “make a difference” in the community. Work with creative motivated staff team to reach multiple target audiences and stakeholders with high-outcome programs. Our agency in San Jose, California, has been serving the community for over 100 years. Program of focus will be environmental health education in the community, including an emphasis on climate change resilience and eliminating environmental triggers for asthma.
Environmental Health Educator responsibilities:
· Conduct outreach to engage community stakeholders in agency’s environmental programs
· Collect surveys and neighborhood-level research in environmental justice (EEJ) communities
· Work with impacted communities to identify environmental issues and work for change
· Mentor emerging community leaders
· Help EEJ community residents who have asthma to identify environmental hazards in their homes and reduce them
· Assist with distribution of air filters/purifiers
· Help EEJ community residents to apply for programs to reduce energy costs and get electric vehicles
· Work with transportation stakeholders and assist fleets to transition to electric vehicles
§ Organize/plan environmental events in the community
§ Develop presentations and trainings
§ Conduct training for Youth for a Cool Earth student peer mentors and coordinate their activities
§ Provide environmental health programs to schools
§ Assist with other agency programs as needed
Characteristics:
· Must be a non-smoker
· Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
· Very organized.
· Ability to work well in one-to-one and group interactions
· Degree in environment, health science, social science, public health, or related fields preferred, or at least two years’ experience working in similar position
· Experience with, formal training in, or volunteering with community programs
· Familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
· Bilingual capacity a plus
Salary:
Based upon education and experience. $18-$25 per hour.
