CMER Geomorphologist

Duties and Responsibilities: This position provides expertise in mass wasting, slope stability, surface erosion, hydrology, experimental design and quantitative research methods to support research conducted by the Cooperative Monitoring, Evaluation and Research (CMER) Committee for the Washington State Forest Practices Adaptive Management Program. The incumbent will work collaboratively with project teams under guidance of CMER and its scientific advisory groups to design, implement and report on research and monitoring projects to inform the adaptive management process.
Qualifications: Master's degree in a Geology, Hydrology, Geomorphology or closely related field and three years professional work experience in designing, implementing, and reporting on research related to mass wasting, slope stability, surface erosion or hydrologic processes. A PhD degree may substitute for the required experience provided the field of major study was related to mass wasting, slope stability, hydrology or erosion processes. Minimum two year experience organizing and directing research projects. Working knowledge of the relationship between forest management and slope stability, mass wasting, surface erosion and hydrologic/fluvial processes. Advanced working knowledge of quantitative research methods, including experimental design, multi-variate statistical analysis methods, slope stability, and hydrological modeling, and spatial analysis in GIS. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Experience working collaboratively and communicating effectively with stake-holder groups to achieve consensus in a contentious stake-holder-driven process. Demonstrated ability and experience in designing, planning, organizing and implementing field studies in forested and mountainous terrain. Remote sensing data interpretation and analysis experience desired. Experience with machine learning techniques and programming is desired. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple assignments, perform well under pressure and meet deadlines with minimal direct supervision. Interpersonal and team building skills, ability to work with and for people of different cultures and perspectives. Valid Washington State Driver’s License.
