Research Intern

Greenacres Foundation (GAF):

All opportunities are customized to the needs of the visiting group which primarily consist of local school groups from K to 8. All school based programs are tied to the national and/or state standards so that they contribute to the success of the classroom teacher. 

In 1988 we focused on Environment Education, had one employee and provided hands-on programs about riparian zones for 60 children. Each year we provide programs based on the environment, generative agriculture, equine, and classical arts to over 32,000 visitors. Our programs are of the highest quality. Objective: 
The Greenacres Research Department is looking for a paid research intern from May to August to join our 2023 season. Greenacres research is multidisciplinary and explores connections between management practices and outcomes on our land and end products. The 2023 intern will work alongside the Greenacres Research Team to assist with monitoring, sampling, data collection, and various tasks for current research projects. Interns will gain experience across several disciplines, including agriculture, ecology, and land management. In addition to job duties, our interns are required to complete an independent project during their internship at Greenacres. But, don’t worry, project ideas will be developed with guidance from your supervisor(s)!
 
The Research Intern will have the opportunity to get hands-on experience with the following skills:
  • Sample collection and preparation (vegetation, forage, soil, farm products)
  • Ecosystem and pasture monitoring (canopy, understory, soil, forage)
  • The establishment of monitoring sites (woodlands, riparian areas, pastures, etc.)
  • Data entry using Microsoft Excel
  • Searching, reviewing, and critiquing scientific literature
  • Data collection for on-farm research project(s)
  • Professional communication
Requirements
  • A background or interest in any of the following: Ecology, Botany, Agriculture, Environmental Sciences or a related science.
  • A basic understanding of the scientific method is expected
  • Interns must be prepared to work in a professional environment, complete tasks carefully and in a timely manner
  • Interns must be prompt, responsible and focused
  • Coursework and/or experience identifying trees and plants is preferred
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week
  • Strong attention to detail is required
  • The ability to self-motivate and be persistent required
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Ability to successfully pass a post-offer pre-employment drug test and fingerprint FBI background screen
  • Ability to work with both internal and external partners with the same or very different backgrounds to ensure that all who visit Greenacres get the highest quality experience that addresses their needs
