Research Analyst - Applied Physics and Emerging Technologies
In support of the United States government, the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) operates three Federally Funded Research and Development Centers—two serving the Department of Defense (DoD) and one serving the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the Executive Office of the President of the United States. IDA guides federal decision-making on issues vital to national security, especially those requiring scientific and technical expertise.
Within IDA’s Science and Technology Division (STD), scientists and engineers address national-security concerns by providing rigorous assessments of emerging science and technologies. The Division conducts analyses critical to scientific R&D programs, acquisition decisions, federal training, and assessments of foreign technological capabilities.
STD has an immediate need for a research-staff member (RSM) with expertise in one or more subdisciplines of applied physics. The RSM would support the U.S. government in evaluating emergent physics and technological trends, particularly within quantum-information sciences, sensor development, electromagnetics, and computational modeling. The ideal candidate is an experienced applied physicist with an eagerness to support the broad spectrum of research performed within STD.
- A Ph.D. in physics, electrical engineering, materials science, or another related field is required.
- At least two years of post-graduate work experience (via DoD or other government research organizations, academic research, industry, or fellowships/internships/post-doctoral).
- Experience in quantum-information sciences, electromagnetic sensing or communication, or computational modeling is preferred.
- The candidate must have a proven record of research and accomplishment in their field.
- The candidate must have the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of small project teams.
- The candidates should have experience with programming languages and environments. Experience in Python, R, Stata, Mathematica, or MATLAB is highly desired.
- U.S. Citizenship is required.
