Media & Public Relations Intern

Media & Public Relations Intern:

The Salt Lake City Council Office is looking to add a Media & Public Relations Intern to their team to help amplify media outreach efforts. The Council leverages various priorities and policies to collaborate with media partners on with the overall goal of informing and engage constituents across the City’s seven districts.  
If you have an interest and background in producing creative work, solving problems, welcoming feedback from team members, meeting project deadlines, and being flexible and proactive, this internship is for you. 
Strong accountability and communication skills are essential in this role. Spanish or other second language fluencies, including American sign language, are a plus. 
The position is hybrid with a minimum of two days in the office per week and the remainder remote/work from home. The position requires 20 hours of work each week, with a predictable, regular schedule. We are open to identifying work hours around your school schedule.

Position Overview: 
This internship will benefit the student through the following learning objectives: 
  • Practical understanding of communications and public relations tactics 
  • Experience leveraging various communication skills on diverse projects 
  • Gaining insight into media and community relations in the public sector 
  • Access to professional development opportunities and mentorship from members of the communications team 
  • Confidence participating in team meetings and discussions and collaborating with a diverse group of public service professionals 
 
Responsibilities: 
  • Assist with news monitoring and clipping broadcast and online mentions 
  • Brainstorm and propose City Council story ideas to pitch to the media 
  • Draft media materials, including pitches, talking points, media advisories and press releases 
  • Follow up on pitches by calling news desks and sending emails 
  • Coordinate with various workgroups to facilitate integrated public engagement efforts 
  • Develop working knowledge of local market reporters, beats and opportunities 
  • Draft City Council meeting recap emails and layout in email marketing platform 
 
Minimum qualifications:  
  • Enrolled in a degree program in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or related field  
  • Strong writing, editing and verbal communications skills 
  • Self-starter who can work with minimal supervision 
  • Understanding of current media landscape and trends 
  • Ability to multitask and excel in a fast-paced team environment 
  • Basic HTML knowledge 
 
Preferred qualifications:  
  • Experience with public relations software such as Cision and TVEyes 
  • Familiarity with AP Style writing 
  • Strong interpersonal skills 
  • Familiarity with project management software (Asana, Monday, Trello, etc.) 
  • Skilled at content management software (WordPress, SquareSpace, etc.) 
  • Proficiency in a second language such as Spanish and American Sign Language
