Associate Engineer - Spark Engineering Rotational Program

The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) applies cutting-edge technology to operating a reliable electricity system, managing competitive markets for wholesale electricity, and planning for the Empire State's energy future. The NYISO invites applications for full-time Associate Engineers to join the NYISO’s rotational Spark program.
 
The Spark Engineer will serve consecutive six-month sessions developing a wide range of Engineering practices employed by the NYISO across the organization. The NYISO’s Spark Program is a two-year rotational program, during which participants will gain a strong foundational knowledge of the NYISO’s core business areas, while developing the necessary technical skills to support these business areas. Successful candidates will be self-motivated professionals who display effective collaboration in a team-based environment and are able to manage multiple competing priorities with the use of good judgment, problem-solving and decision-making skills. Upon the successful completion of the two-year rotational program, the Spark Engineer will be guaranteed a full-time professional level role (i.e. Engineer) within the NYISO.
 
As a Spark Engineer, you can expect to:
  • Develop and demonstrate technical expertise and strong leadership skills
  • Work on impactful and challenging problems in the energy industry during their 6-month rotations in departments such as: Operations, Market Operations, Market Structures, and System and Resource Planning. This may include:
  • Supporting all aspects of transmission and generation facility outage coordination functions at the NYISO
  • Developing engineering studies and performing analysis regarding system reliability and regulatory impacts on transmission system and reliability
  • Developing complex power system models
  • Supporting NYISO activities related to the Install Capacity (ICAP) market, including performing time-sensitive analysis and providing support for the administration of the ICAP auctions
  • Assisting in the design, modification, and implementation of market rules for the NYISO’s market products
  • Receive mentorship and technical training from leaders in the energy sector
  • Participate in workshops geared towards professional development

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent is required. Overall GPA must be greater than or equal to 3.0/4.0. A concentration in electric power system engineering is preferred.
  • No prior industry related or professional experience required. Experience in electric power systems, transmission security, power flow analysis, security constrained dispatch, and/or resource adequacy helpful; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Desire and interest to work in the Energy Industry preferred.
  • Ability to demonstrate an analytical approach to problem solving
  • Strong team and interpersonal skills with the ability to work cross functionally
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to clearly articulate technical problems and solutions
