The primary mission of the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is to provide science-based environmental stewardship for the health and prosperity of all North Carolinians.

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is the lead stewardship agency for the protection of North Carolina's environmental resources. The organization, which has offices from the mountains to the coast, administers regulatory programs designed to protect air quality, water quality, and the public's health, and works to advance in all-of-the-above energy strategy that fits North Carolina's needs. DEQ also offers technical assistance to businesses, farmers, local governments, and the public and encourages responsible behavior with respect to the environment through education programs provided at DEQ facilities and through the state's school system. DEQ touches the lives of all North Carolinians in many ways to enhance and ensure our quality of life.

Class Concept:
Employees in this classification independently perform geological and hydrogeological work. The work involves collecting, analyzing, and interpreting geological/hydrogeological data and processes concerning surficial deposits, bedrock, groundwater resources and/or geotechnical subsurface evaluations, and may include: data collection and evaluation, mapping, report preparation and investigations of geological/hydrogeological conditions for application to industrial/economic considerations, local government planning, regulatory, and/or environmental and public health concerns; or to help locate mineral, geothermal, and petroleum deposits and underground water resources. Employees in this classification may also conduct or participate in environmental studies and prepare environmental reports and apply principles of rock and soil mechanics or any other branch of geological knowledge in the planning, design, construction, operation, and safety of engineering projects.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL the following: 
 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and/or practices of geology and hydrogeology.
  • Demonstrated experience in analyzing and/or evaluating data for site-specific situations.
  • Demonstrated experience communicating moderately complex hydrogeological concepts to consulting engineers, municipal officials, or the public using either written and/or oral communication skills.

Management Preferences
  • NC Licensed Geologist preferred.
  • Three years' experience as a hydrogeologist related to environmental assessment and cleanup preferred.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in geology, geosciences, physical science or a related field, or engineering with 30 credit hours of geological science course work from an accredited college or university. Some positions may require licensure as a Professional Geologist by the North Carolina Board for the Licensing of Geologists.
